Unipart Logistics Deploys RFID-Based Information Service From Savi Networks to Track Jaguar Car Parts From UK to US
Unipart Logistics Selects SaviTrak(TM) to Provide Real-Time Information on the Location, Security Status and Condition of Containerized Cargo From Origin to Destination
LONDON and BELMONT, Calif., Sept. 18 -- Unipart, one of Europe's largest logistics service providers, recently began tracking Jaguar car parts in real-time while they're transported in cargo containers from the United Kingdom to the United States. Under the Jaguar Tradelane Project, the containers are tracked by using SaviTrak(TM), a Radio Frequency Identification-based (RFID) information service provided by Savi Networks.
Unipart and Savi Networks will provide best-of-breed services and solutions leveraging SaviTrak to monitor the location, security status and condition of cargo container shipments when they pass by readers at factories, ports, distribution facilities and other key supply chain nodes. Savi Networks is a joint venture between Savi Technology, Inc., a Lockheed Martin company , and Hutchison Port Holdings, the world's leading port operator.
The objective of the Jaguar Tradelane Project is to evaluate the flow of Jaguar parts in a number of areas, including:
-- Improving real-time visibility of container shipments as they move end-to-end throughout the supply chain from the point of origin to the point of final destination. -- Reducing lead-times and time variances involved from the moment an order is placed to the time it is delivered. -- Reducing costs associated with urgent air cargo transportation that's required to make up for time lost from one of the many causes of delay or uncertainty in the supply chain. -- Improving overall supply chain performance and customer service. -- Improving information accuracy and therefore the ability to make supply chain management decisions when key events occur.
"As a long-time, leading provider and innovator of logistics solutions, Unipart is looking to continuously improve services to our clients, and we expect the SaviTrak information service will help Jaguar and potentially other customers gain greater value through improved supply chain performance," said Carl Powell, director and general manager of USP, the Supply Chain Consultancy Division of Unipart Logistics. "Within Unipart Logistics we focus on providing industry-leading levels of customer service and product availability. Within the project we are creating targeted measurements to quantify SaviTrak benefits to improve supply chain visibility and performance, security status monitoring, and overall economics."
"SaviTrak delivers new levels of performance measurement and execution capability for logistics companies such as Unipart and for their customers," said Lani Fritts, chief operating officer of Savi Networks. "Our customers are gaining better control and visibility over their supply chains, which allow them to make better and more timely decisions on their global shipments."
The Jaguar Tradelane Project tracks RFID-tagged containers filled with automobile parts from inland warehouse and distribution centers to the United Kingdom's Port of Felixstowe. The containers are tracked when they arrive in the United States at two destination ports: the Port of New York/New Jersey and the Port of Oakland in California. The shipments are further monitored as they enter distribution centers in Northern California and in New Jersey.
The SaviTrak information service is built on an open-technology network that captures data from all types of standards-based Automatic Identification and Data Collection (AIDC) devices, including bar codes, sensors, passive and active RFID and GPS satellite location systems. The information service generates real-time reports and exception-based alerts to each customer, including routes, missed shipments, or environmental conditions.
Savi Networks LLC provides shippers and their logistics providers with greater efficiency and security in their global supply chains through SaviTrak(TM), a real-time information service that monitors the location and status of cargo container shipments and their contents. The company, which is a joint venture between Savi Technology, Inc., a Lockheed Martin company [NYSE: LMT], and Hutchison Port Holdings, the world's leading port operator, partners with ports and terminal operators to extend its global network, which leverages standards-based Automatic Identification and Data Collection technologies.
