NHRA Summit Racing Series, Sunday from Heartland Park Topeka
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NHRA SUMMIT RACING SERIES - WEST CENTRAL DIVISION HEARTLAND PARK TOPEKA Sunday, September 17, 2006 Contact: Eric Lotz, NHRA (626) 688-8646 SUMMIT CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT HEARTLAND PARKTOPEKA, Kan. - Rodney Thompson took the win in Super Pro and Gary Schueneman won his second NHRA West Central Division Summit Racing Series Championship in as many years this weekend at Heartland Park Topeka and the NHRA Summit Racing Series Championship.Mark Johnson of Wichita, Kan., joined in with a win in Sportsman while Jeff Lanoue won in Pro Bike and Kyle Moberly took the trophy in the High School class out of Oxford, Kan., Rock Falls Raceway took home the Team Championship combining for 61 round wins.
Thompson, running for Brainerd International Raceway, drove his '94 Cutlass to a pass of 9.907 seconds at 163.28 mph for the win over Dee Hoover of Colorado Springs, Colo., who won the West Central Division Super Pro Championship back in 1983 held at Bandimere Speedway outside of Denver.
Schueneman took out Grove Creek Raceway teammate Mike Sandstrom in Pro, successfully defending his championship from a year ago. The Elko, Minn., resident recorded a lap of 10.255 seconds at 129.85 mph for the win.
Johnson gave the Wichita Int'l Raceway team a reason to celebrate with his win over Tyler Wudarzcek of home team Heartland Park Topeka. Johnson ran his '73 AMC to 13.053 second lap at 105.73 mph.
In an all Rock Falls Raceway final, Lanoue of Zimmerman, Minn., outran Ken Niesen with a pass of 8.022 seconds, 137.51 mph to Niesen's 9.802, 135.65. The two racers led the Rock Falls team to the Team Championship holding off Heartland Park in second with 58 round wins while S.R.C.A. Dragstrip tied for third at 47 wins with Brainerd International Raceway.
Oxford, Kan., racer, Moberly went 12.650 seconds at 106.33 mph in his '69 Plymouth over Trist Henderson of S.R.C.A. Dragstrip in Great Bend, Kan.
The West Central Division Champions in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Pro Bike now move on to compete for the Summit National Championship at Pomona Raceway and the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. NHRA Division Champions from across the country will compete for the $118,000 purse and the title of NHRA Summit Racing Series National Champion.
