RAIN DELAYS ALCOHOL FINALS, ALL OTHER CHAMPIONS CROWNED IN HOUSTON

HOUSTON - The final eliminations at the 19th Annual Sportsman Challenge, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, at Houston Raceway Park are complete except in the categories of Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car. Rain delays throughout the weekend forced NHRA officials to postpone the finals in those categories to September 21 - 24 at the O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals in Dallas, Texas. In Dallas, Dave Heitzman of Grand Rapids, Ohio will take on Spencer Massey of Fort Worth, Texas in Top Alcohol Dragster and Jimmy Jones of Cleburne, Texas, will race against Jay Payne of Claremont, Calif., in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Comp Eliminator racer Glen Treadwell of Sorrento, Fla., made a pass of 12.474 seconds at 67.28 mph to defeat Tom Schmidt of Lindstrom who ran 14.249 seconds at 58.09 mph.

Randall Klein of Lincoln, Neb., took home a trophy in Super Stock running in a '56 Nomad making a pass of 12.439 seconds at 80.82 mph. Klein defeated Jerry Emmons of Pasadena, Texas, who made a pass of 17.118 seconds at 49.47 mph. Also topping the field was Super Comp driver Edmond Richardson Jr. of Greenbrier, Tenn., who ran 8.911 seconds at 161.69 mph.

In Super Gas the big winner was Roger Warren of Jacksonville, Texas, who drove a '97 Cutlass defeating Anthony Castillo of Grandview, Wash. Also finishing on top was Mike Frederick Sr, of Beaumont, Texas who ran 10.936 seconds at 147.17 mph to overtake Craig Abbott of Strawn, Texas.

In other categories this weekend, Stock Eliminator pilot, James Paul of Ft. Worth, Texas, found the winner's circle driving a '73 Duster 11.430 seconds at 113.89 at mph to defeat Harvey Emmons III, of Friendswood, Texas. Top Sportsman driver Mike Manners of Willis, Texas made a pass of 7.618, 170.45 mph defeating Larry Smith of Ridgeland, Miss., for the win, while Top Dragster pilot Ronnie Hughes of Decatur, ran 7.514 seconds at 176.93 mph also finished in first. In the Motorcycle category, Mike McCullah of Houston, Texas made a final pass of 8.296 seconds at 155.31 mph to defeat Larry Eperjesi of Lake Dallas, Texas.
