Federal Driver ID Program Deemed ''Impossible'' 5 Years after 9-11; Jevic Transportation Manages to Make It Work; ''Security Web'' Just One Part of Comprehensive Security Program
DELANCO, N.J.--Sept. 12, 2006--After two years of battling special interest groups, the Federal government recently abandoned its efforts to create a national driver ID card. The Real ID Act, drafted on the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission as a deterrent to terrorists, would have mandated an electronically readable driver's license/ID card for all Americans. In October 2001, several years prior to the Commission's report, Jevic implemented its own driver photo ID program, realizing that verifying driver identity was invaluable to its customers' security and peace of mind. It has been a resounding success, with overwhelming support from customers. Despite the Real ID Act's demise, Jevic will continue to require its drivers to carry digital photo ID cards.
"The driver photo ID card is the hallmark of our comprehensive security program, and has become an invaluable way for Jevic to help customers manage supply chain risk and protect their valuable goods," said Jevic President and CEO Dave Gorman. "Privacy concerns have been minimal. Our drivers understand our customers' concerns and are glad to put their minds at ease by wearing a photo ID."
The Jevic program, called Security Web(TM), is a proprietary system that requires each Jevic driver to wear an identification card featuring a digital photo and barcode. When the driver arrives at the gate, security personnel can scan the barcode and immediately view the driver's photo and qualifications online at www.jevic.com.
In cases where a company entry point is not equipped with a scanner, security personnel can go online, find out which driver is scheduled to make their delivery, and obtain a printout of the driver's photo for comparison when the driver arrives.
"The photo ID simply removes all doubt; this person is who they say they are - a professional Jevic driver," Gorman said.
In addition to Security Web(TM), the Jevic Breakbulk-Free(R) LTL operating model ensures a more consistent, secure environment for every shipment, with varying, surveillance-resistant routes and minimal transfers and handling.
As long as there are transportation security risks, Jevic will continue to take the lead in developing security initiatives that protect customer shipments.
Jevic Transportation, Inc., an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners, is a less-than-truckload motor carrier providing best-in-class services through its exclusive Breakbulk-Free(R) operating model. Services include Heat Fleet(R), 100% Guaranteed(R), Next Day, Regional, National, Canadian LTL, and selected truckload services. Without the multiple handling associated with "hub and spoke" carriers, Jevic provides an industry-low claims ratio, helping to create more efficiencies in its customers' supply chains.
