Visteon Demonstrates Commitment to Advanced Electronics Technology
GM Sequel features Visteon's steer-by-wire system
VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich., Sept. 12 -- A Visteon Corporation technical expert is on hand as GM launches its hydrogen fuel cell-powered concept vehicle, the Sequel. This fully functional advanced vehicle emits only water vapor and sports a host of futuristic technology including Visteon's advanced electronics steer-by-wire system.

The vehicle is being unveiled at a ride-and-drive media event at California's Camp Pendleton, Sept. 10 - 16.
Visteon's steer-by-wire system demonstrates the company's focus on innovation in electronics -- it consists of front and rear electromechanical actuators, a torque feedback emulator for the steering wheel, and a distributed electronic control system. Redundant sensors, actuators, controllers and power provide a back-up structure that allows the system to be fault-tolerant. Control is provided by multiple electronic control units that are linked by a fault-tolerant communication system called FlexRay -- an industry standard. The system on the Sequel uses a steering wheel -- a mechanism all drivers know -- rather than a joystick.

The electronic architecture of the steer-by-wire system offers the potential to enhance steering functionality by enabling features such as automatic lane keeping, park assist, variable-ratio steering and advanced vehicle dynamics control.
"Visteon's system offers speed-dependent, variable-ratio steering and can be tuned to feel like anything from a sports car to a truck," explains Daugherty. "These features led GM to include steer-by-wire technology in this next-generation fuel cell demonstration vehicle."
The technology used for the steer-by-wire system is also applied to other advanced electronics technology at Visteon, including blind spot detection.
