NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Friday from Tri-State Raceway

NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES - WEST CENTRAL DIVISION

EARLVILLE, Iowa. September 08, 2006; In the first rounds of qualifying at
Tri-State Raceway for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series presented by
Hustler Turf Equipment, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Lee Calloway and Top
Alcohol Funny Car pilot Cy Chesterman took the No. 1 qualifying
positions in their classes.


            Calloway clocked in at 5.484 seconds at 260.01 mph and is
followed by Dave Heitzman at 5.597 seconds and Ed Schmeeckle of
Gothenburg, Neb., in third, running 5.634 seconds.
            Local favorite Richard Putz of Earlvillle, Iowa, left the
starting line before the starting tree was activated and did not receive
a time. The 2-time defending event champion will have to rely on
tomorrow's final two qualifying session to earn his spot in the 8-car
field.


Chesterman, of Sioux City, Iowa, covered the quarter-mile in 5.899
seconds at 250.37 mph. The 4-time West Central Division Funny Car
Champion is followed by Des Moines, Iowa, racer Vern Moats with a 5.970
second pass at 248.02 mph and Andrew Bohl of Racine, Wis., in third
running 5.987 seconds, 242.50 mph.


The Comp Eliminator is class is led by Bub Miller of Edwardsville, Kan.,
with a lap of 8.316 seconds and is followed by reigning NHRA Lucas Oil
National Champion Jeff Taylor running 8.586 seconds in his '05 Grand Am.



Matt Driskell went 7.062 seconds at 188.78 mph for the No. 1 spot in Top
Comp followed by Royalton, Minn., resident Joel Newman and Manly, Iowa,
runner Clarence Mayo at 7.152 seconds at 187.23 mph


Thomas Plant of Rosedale, Ind., took the preliminary pole in Super Stock
with a 10.131 second lap. Mike Mans of Rogers, Minn., is second and Don
O'Malley put his '64 Corvette in the third spot. Robert Shaw qualified
No. 1 in Stock Eliminator in his '79 Cadillac with a 13.688 second pass.
Steve Brack sits second and Waterloo, Iowa, racer Jack Briner is
eleventh in the 77-car field.


            Racing continues Saturday at 8 a.m.  Gates open at 7 a.m.
