Cummins Named to Dow Jones Sustainability World Index For Second Year

COLUMBUS, Ind.--Sept. 8, 2006--Cummins Inc. has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index in 2006 for the second year in row, being recognized again for its economic, environmental and social leadership. This index represents the top 10 percent of the world's largest 2,500 companies in these corporate sustainability metrics.

The updated index based on Dow Jones' annual review becomes effective with the opening of the equity markets on Sept. 18.

Cummins is one of 42 global companies included in the World Index's industrial goods and services sector and one of 11 U.S. companies to make the list in that sector. In its annual review, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) analyzes companies in three broad categories - economic, social, and environment, counting for 22, 36 and 42 percent, respectively, of the total score in the industrial sector.

Specific issues considered include corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change, supply chain standards, labor practices, corporate citizenship and philanthropy, employee development, environmental management systems, and environmental policy and procedures and the scope of their application.

"Cummins operates under a set of values that emphasizes integrity, innovation, delivering superior results and global corporate responsibility," said Christine Vujovich, Vice President of Environmental Policy and Corporate Marketing. "We are pleased that taking care of our environment, customers, employees and communities puts us in 'best in class' with companies we respect both in the U.S. and internationally. This behavior is embedded in our Vision and Mission and is what our employees expect of themselves every day."

Cummins has made improvements in a number of key sustainability-related areas in the past year. Among them:

-- commitment to develop a company-wide global climate change policy,

-- certifying two more plants to the ISO 14001 standard, bringing the number of ISO 14001-certified Cummins facilities to 37,

-- development and implementation of the Supplier Code of Conduct,

-- creation of online Code of Conduct training,

-- launch of a global branding initiative,

-- creation of the Customer Support Excellence initiative

-- implementation of the "Every Employee, Every Community" service initiative, which provides all Cummins employees the opportunity to volunteer in their communities on Company time.

Dow Jones enlists the help of SAM Research in compiling its indices. Invitations to participate in the Index are sent to 2,500 companies worldwide; SAM Research analyzed approximately 1,200 companies through a combination of company-supplied and public information. The selection of index components follows a prescribed rules-based process and analysis is verified by an external auditor.

According to SAM Research, the 2006 assessment revealed a number of sustainability developments in the corporate word, including:

-- Large discrepancies exist between companies concerning their operational risk management.

-- Leaders are trying to quantify the value of their brands.

-- Climate change continues to attract increased attention.

-- More global firms tailor their product offerings to the specific needs of developing countries.

-- Overall, sustainability performance continues to advance across all sectors. At the same time, substantial room for improvement for progress in sustainability remains on the corporate agenda.
