CASCAR Super Series returns to Montreal for a make-up Super Series race at
Autodrome St-Eustache
TORONTO, ON – Just weeks after a successful inaugural appearance at the
Grand Prix de Montreal, the CASCAR Super Series is returning to Montreal,
Quebec for a 200-lap race at Autodrome St-Eustache. The flat, 4/10-mile
oval has long played host to Canada’s top stock car tour. This Saturday
night’s race is a make-up date for one that was rained out earlier in the
summer. With the postponement, the St-Eustache event takes on new and
increased significance, given that it’s now the next-to-last points event
on the 2006 Super Series schedule.
The race will go a long way toward determining the Super
Series points championship. As he has for most of the season, Milwaukee
Tools Chevy driver J.R. Fitzpatrick will enter the St-Eustache event as the
Super Series’ points leader. If anyone was anticipating that the third-year
CASCAR competitor would fold under the pressure of being in the thick of
his first championship chase, it hasn’t happened. The Cambridge, ON
resident continues to post top-finishes in his quest for his first CASCAR
title.
Fitzpatrick enjoys a 44-point lead over second-place
driver Kerry Micks. The Mt. Albert, ON Ford racer has a pair of wins to his
credit in 2006, but is coming off a frustrating 18th-place finish in last
Sunday’s race at Cayuga Int’l Speedway where he suffered a power loss with
30 laps to go. By failing to finish at Cayuga, it dealt a serious setback
to Micks’ hopes for earning a second career Super Series crown.
Three-time CASCAR champ Dave Whitlock (NTN-Bower / Griddly
Headz Dodge) is a former race winner at St-Eustache (in 2002) and has
captured checkered flags in two of the last three Super Series feature
races (Mosport & Cayuga). His strong runs late in the schedule have lifted
the Wyoming, ON racer to within one point of Micks, in third.
Behind them, in fourth place overall, is Don Thomson Jr.,
the five-time and defending CASCAR National champ. The Home Hardware Chevy
driver has experienced a change of fortune this season and finds himself in
unfamiliar territory with two races remaining, a full 58 points back of his
Fitzpatrick Motorsports teammate, J.R. Fitzpatrick.
Time trials for Saturday night’s 200-lap CASCAR Super
Series race at Autodrome St-Eustache are scheduled for 8 p.m., while the
green flag is scheduled to fly on the feature race at 9:30 p.m.
LAST YEAR AT ST-EUSTACHE: Ford driver Kerry Micks is the defending race
winner at St-Eustache. The Mt. Albert, ON resident took the lead on lap 118
of last season’s race and never looked back en route to his first of two
feature wins in 2005. DJ Kennington (Castrol Dodge Charger) and Ron
Beauchamp Jr. (MOPAR Dodge Charger) were second and third, respectively.
Canadian Tire Chevy driver Peter Gibbons earned the pole for CASCAR’s 2005
appearance at St-Eustache on the strength of a 17.767 second lap around the
4/10-mile oval during time trials.
WESTERN SERIES: Last Saturday night (Sept. 3), Vernon, BC’s Sun Valley
Speedway played host to the next-to-last CASCAR Flo~Pro.Com Western Series
race of the season. Kamloops, BC racer Jim White was dominant in his MOPAR
/ Kamloops Dodge-sponsored Charger, taking his second victory of the season
and extending his points lead in the process. White earned the pole
position for the Brandt Tractor 200 and led 103 of the 200 feature laps
around the ½-mile tri-oval.
Edmonton’s Kevin Dowler, the five-time Western Series
champ, brought his EMCO Ford Taurus home in second, just ahead of another
multi-time title winner, Wade Lee. The Calgarian guided the Thirsty Dog Pup
Pontiac to the final podium position. With the win, White will head to the
season-finale, at Saskatoon’s Auto Clearing Motor Speedway, with a 23-point
lead over Dowler.
