Guy Cosmo Grand Am Season Wrap-Up
Guy Cosmo Finishes Out The Grand Am Season On A High Taking 2nd Spot
On The
Podium
Guy Cosmo wrapped up his season in the Grand Am Rolex Series with a
second place finish in the season finale at the Miller Motorsport
Park in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Re-joining the Playboy Racing/Uniden/Palms team for the sixth time
this season, Cosmo continued to show his skills and prowess piloting
the demanding Daytona Prototype cars.
"It was an honor filling in for these guys (Michael McDowell and Memo
Gidley) throughout the season," noted Guy. "But it was an extra treat
for all three of us to share the #19 Playboy/Uniden/Palms car
together and celebrate on the podium. Memo and Michael are both
outstanding drivers and the Finlay Motorsports team and crew is one
of the best out there. I’m glad that Rob Finlay and Steve Cameron
gave me this opportunity to race with them both this weekend.”
“What a great race, and the perfect way to cap off the season," Guy
continued. "Even though I was in the car when the power steering
began to let go, our #19 Playboy/Uniden/Palms car was outstanding
during the whole race. It was fast and very consistent throughout our
stints. Our Ford motor was strong and reliable the whole way. When
the power steering let go, it became difficult to hang on for 23
turns per lap, but we didn’t let it stop us. I think this weekend
really showed what we’re made of.”
"Our pit stops were flawless as well" said Guy, passing credit on to
the team. "Today was nearly the perfect day for us. Negotiating the
course and squeezing through GT traffic while battling for position
in this tight Daytona Prototype field is some of the most exciting
racing I’ve ever done."
Reflecting on his first visit to Miller Motorsports Park, Guy tipped
his visor to the new facility.
“The track is immaculate, challenging, a lot of fun to drive, and
quite demanding as well," noted Guy. "The facilities are incredible
and it’s easy to say Miller Motorsports Park has become one of the
premier race tracks in North America. It was the perfect venue for
this 9-hour event, and I can’t wait to race here again.”
2006 was only the beginning:
“Having not had any plans to compete in Grand Am at the beginning of
this year I’ve wound up with a really great season," said Cosmo,
looking back. "Being chosen to drive the #19 Playboy/Uniden car both
with Michael and Memo for six events and co-driving with Bobby
Labonte at Spirit of Daytona Racing for three events in between has
been a terrific opportunity. I’ve worked with some really great
people and managed to run nearly the entire season. In a field with
so many of today’s best racing drivers I’ve had a blast running up
front and mixing it up with them."
"I really want to thank Troy and Michelle Flis at Spirit of Daytona
Racing and Bobby Labonte," said Guy, "And thank Rob Finlay and Steve
Cameron at Finlay Motorsports, as well as Michael McDowell and Memo
Gidley. This was an exciting season and I look forward to contesting
the entire Daytona Prototype championship in 2007.”
As Guy's Grand Am season draws to a close, there is still plenty of
work to do over in the American Le Mans Series. Guy will join his
teammate, Jaime Bach and the B-K Motorsports team as they re-join the
Series for the remaining two events at Road Atlanta for the annual 10
hour running of the Petit Le Mans and the season finale at Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca. Having suffered considerable race damage at Lime
Rock, the team has been on hiatus making improvements and repairs to
their Mazda powered Courage LMP2 car.
Guy Cosmo's extensive background with open-wheel formula cars and
