Bristol not kind to Tim Sauter
Bristol not kind to Tim Sauter
August 25th, Bristol, TN. Friday evenings Food City 250 at the
Bristol Motor Speedway did not turn out the way that McGill
Motorsports driver Tim Sauter had envisioned. Returning to the track
where he finished 21st earlier in the year, Sauter felt he could get
his Lester Buildings Chevy into the top-twenty this weekend.
The night ended much sooner than planned when Tim was involved in a
hard crash on lap 209. Sauter’s car was hit by both Shane Huffman
and Jamie McMurray before impacting the inside retaining wall where
the car came to rest. Sauter had spun his Lester Buildings Chevy
trying to avoid the car of Burney Lamar who had spun in front of him.
The impact dazed Sauter for several moments, but he was able to walk
under his own power to a nearby stretcher wearing a precautionary
neck brace. After a check-up in the infield care center, Tim was
transported to the Bristol Regional Medical Center for further tests
and overnight evaluation. He was released Saturday morning and has
returned to his Wisconsin home.
After qualifying 32nd, Tim moved the silver #36 toward the front
reaching 25th by lap 50. He reported the car was turning good, and
felt he could keep gaining positions. Sauter made a stop on lap 71
for four tires and fuel. Shortly after the stop, Tim radioed the crew
that the brake pedal was getting a little soft. On lap 94, in typical
Bristol fashion Auggie Vidovich spun Tim coming off of turn two. The
Lester Buildings Chevy was forced to the garage to replace the
radiator as a result of the incident. “I think the 4 car could have
cut us a little slack,” Sauter said. “But he’s racing as hard as he
can, it’s why the fans come to Bristol.”
After repairs, Sauter returned to the track some 50 laps down in an
attempt to earn valuable points. He was running near the back of the
back when the accident on lap 209 occurred. Sauter was credited with
34th place in the event won by fellow Wisconsin driver Matt Kenseth.
“It’s a real shame for this McGill Motorsports team, we just don’t
seem to have any luck. The car was real good early in the race and I
thought we could get a lead lap finish.” Sauter explained. “I really
don’t remember the accident, but I know the 77 was sideways in front
of me and I hit the brakes pretty hard.”
The McGill Motorsports team travels to the California Speedway on
September 2nd for the Ameriquest 300. As a result of the accident,
Tim Sauter will sit out this week to recover and Stanton Barrett will
take over the drivers seat at the fast two-mile track just east of
Los Angeles.
