NORWALK, OHIO (August 28, 2006) -- Rain delayed the start yesterday,
then postponed the final round of nitro Funny Car and Top Fuel
eliminations until today for the IHRA Skull Shine World Nationals at
Norwalk Raceway Park (NRP) in Norwalk, Ohio.
The wait was worth it for Hillary Will, driver of the KB Racing-owned,
Kalitta Motorsports-managed Top Fuel dragster, as she won the first Top
Fuel race of her rookie season in her first-ever IHRA national event.
Yesterday, in the opening round, Will got by Rick Cooper, who broke a
blower belt. Will covered the NRP quarter-mile in 4.667 seconds to a
4.864 second pass by Cooper.
For Will, her semifinal match up was a good old drag race. Both Will
and Bruce Litton left together at the start. At the finish line, it was
Will first in 4.604 seconds, followed by Litton in 4.747 seconds. The
win sent Will to the final round against IHRA Top Fuel regular Doug
Foley, who is No. 2 in the IHRA Top Fuel point standings coming into
this race.
Then the rains returned and Will was forced to wait until Monday to
compete in the final round.
On Monday, Foley was out first at the green but had to get off the
throttle when the front end of his dragster started to lift. This
allowed Will to blast on by Foley and take the win light. Will's
winning time was 4.624 seconds. Foley recorded a 6.051 second run in a
losing effort.
Will's KB Racing LLC Dragster, operated and managed by Kalitta
Motorsports, and tuned by crew chief Jim Oberhofer was a model of
consistency throughout the weekend.
With a runner-up finish at the NHRA O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals in
Memphis, Tenn. one week ago and a win here at NRP at the IHRA Skull
Shine World Nationals, Will now heads to Indianapolis for the 52nd
running of the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals with momentum on her side.
/KB Racing LLC is owned by Las Vegas businessmen Ken Black and Kenny
Black. KB Racing LLC fields the Kalitta Motorsports-managed Top Fuel
dragster driven by rookie driver Hillary Will. Autolite Spark Plugs,
Calico Coatings, Findlay Automotive, Mac Tools, Red Line Oil, Summit
Racing Equipment and the Technicoat Companies are associate marketing
partners for 2006. In addition to Hillary Will's Top Fuel Dragster, KB
Racing LLC also fields two Summit Racing Equipment Pro Stock Pontiac
GTOs, driven by Greg Anderson and Jason Line on the NHRA POWERade Drag
Racing Series. Anderson has won three consecutive POWERade Pro Stock
Championships (2003-2005). Line finished third in the 2005 POWERade
point standings and was honored with the 2004 Automobile Club of
Southern California Road to the Future award, presented to the most
outstanding rookie in a professional category. /
/Kalitta Motorsports (www.kalittaracing.com), owned by the legendary
drag racer and successful businessman Connie Kalitta, will field, in
addition to Will's dragster, three additional nitro fuel cars -- two Top
Fuel dragsters and a Funny Car -- in 2006 in the NHRA POWERade Drag
Racing Series. Doug Kalitta will drive the Mac Tools Top Fuel Dragster,
David Grubnic will handle the driving duties on the StriVectin-SD Top
Fuel Dragster and Scott Kalitta moves from Top Fuel to the Kalitta Air
Funny Car for 2006. /
