SHIELDS, MINER OUTLAST THE FIELDS AT AUTO CLUB FAMOSO RACEWAY
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - NHRA Pacific division Lucas Oil Drag
Racing Series competitors are a step closer to the end of the 2006 season as
they closed out the fifth of seven races in the region at Auto Club Famoso
Raceway. Duane Shields took the win in Top Alcohol Dragster and Larry Miner
scored in Top Alcohol Funny Car.
Shields, a former division champ from Boulder City, Nev., marked
his second win of the season by beating current division points leader Sean
O'Bannon of Alta Loma, Calif. Shields' put together his best run of the
weekend in the final, a 5.341-second, 266.90 mph effort, which was more than
enough to cover O'Bannon's 5.417-second run at 266.27 mph.
For Miner, who has only been to three races this year, this was
his best showing to date. The Lodi, Calif., resident also put together his
best run of the weekend in the final. He ran 5.720 seconds at 253.44 mph
against No. 1 qualifier John Weaver, Newport Beach, Calif., who posted a
5.727-second, 251.74 mph pass.
Doug Lambeck, Northridge, Calif., scored his first win of the
year in Comp Eliminator, beating local favorite Tom Mettler, Bakersfield,
Calif., in the final round, and Super Stock racer John Calvert, Lancaster,
Calif., drove his '68 Mustang to the winner's circle over Ryan McClanahan.
In Stock Eliminator, Mike Williams, Hesperia, Calif., wheeled his '67 Camaro
to the win, beating Don Forester, Riverside, Calif., in the final. Greg
Boutte, Stockton, Calif., earned the win in Super Comp over Venice, Calif.,
racer Alexis Dejoria, while in Super Gas, John Ross, Misison Viejo, Calif.,
outpaced Chris Newman, Lancaster, Calif., for the win. The Super Street
winner was Phoenix's Keith Manogue who held off Scott Kilbourn, Wittmann,
Ariz., in the final. Trace St. Germain, San Jose, Calif., rode to the win
in Sportsman Motorcycle, beating Greg Lisky in the final round while Super
Eliminator racer Terry White, Half Moon Bay, Calif., was the winner over
Mike Solina, Poway, Calif. Matt Hartzell, Atwater, Calif., got the win in
Top Comp, beating Ryan Priddy, Chino, Calif., in the final round.
NHRA Pacific division competitors will head to Nevada for the
next Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Top Gun Raceway in Fallon, Nev.,
will host the meet September 8-10.
