NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series
This week, the 27 Crew decided it was time to make a change to the car.
They decided on a new paint scheme in hopes that it would turn their luck
around and boy did it ever!
Greg Edwards was the fastest qualifier for tonight’s SunTrust 100 Lap Race
with brother Danny qualifying third. With a zero spin for the invert, this
gave the Edwards brothers the chance to start where they qualified for the
Crossroads Fuels Late Model race.
The Edwards Motorsports teams and family members join in the 2-lap walk for
the Victory Junction Gang Camp just before the night’s events commenced.
Just after the walk, Greg was awarded “The Pole Award” compliments of
Bathfitters.
Being the fifth division to race tonight, the Late Model’s were ready and
roaring just after 10:20 p.m. On the start, Greg took the lead in the 27 as
Danny stayed on the outside trying to keep third but the field was tight and
Danny couldn’t find a gap to pull down to the bottom until he reached
seventh.
The first caution came out with 5-laps on the board. On the restart, Greg
was back out front and Danny was holding his position in seventh. Just four
more laps and the brothers started to make their way into lap traffic. On
lap 13, the No. 40 of Mark Wertz started having car trouble and Danny made
his way past to take sixth.
Making their way just past the half way mark, Danny starts to make his move.
He noses the 26 under the 01 of Jeff Shiflett in turn 3. Shiflett took him
on side-by-side until lap 55 when Danny cleared him out front for fifth.
With 29-laps to go, the 12 car of Ross Clements took a spin as he entered
turn four and found his way right into the pit entrance. The caution flag
was out and the officials moved the lap car from between Greg (running
first) and Casey Wyatt (running second). The 07 of Rick Gdovic was moved to
the rear but the other lap cars were left where they were running. The 27
Crew Chief (John McMasters) inquired with the Official on the ground but no
one could answer why the one lapped car was moved since lapped cars are only
moved to the rear when there are 10-laps to go.
On the restart, Greg shot ahead of Casey by a little more than four
car-lengths. With 25-laps to go, Greg was still taking the lead and Danny
was running fourth. Five laps later and Greg had made a gap between and him
second by more than half a straight-a-way. Greg was pushing ahead as he
entered the front stretch and as he made his way to turn one, his spotter
(Brett Huggett) called out for Greg to back it down, caution in turn 2. Two
cars were taking a spill in turn two (one high and one low). In a matter of
only seconds, the spotter is calling it as the turn of events unfold. Greg
went down easy on the brakes and found his way clear.
With only 20-laps to go and they were back under green. One more lap around
and another caution for a single car spin in turn 3. Once again, they were
green flag racing and Greg shot ahead as Danny made his way nose-to-tail
with the 21 of Anthony Warren. With 86-laps on the board, the 26 made its
way under the 21 car for third as they entered turn 3.
With 4-laps to go, Casey made his way in to the close the gap on the 27. He
was just about two-lengths behind as they were running down the last of the
100 laps. Three laps to go and another caution, back under green and the 29
closed in the 27 just as the 26 was nosing his way under the 29 car. Danny
made his way under Casey on the back-stretch as Casey gave a tap the 27.
The 29 got loose and 26 shot ahead just as they made their way around, yet
another caution. Without a full lap completed with the 26 in front of the
29, Casey was put back in between the Edwards brothers for the restart. Two
laps to go for the finish and the 27 still had the power to stay out front
for the win.
It was podium finishes for the Edwards Brothers as Greg took the Victory and
Danny took third. Danny and Greg have moved up to 1st and 2nd
(respectively) for the official track’s point standings. There are sixteen
races on the board and the last point’s race on October 7th; that leaves
only six races to go for the Track Championship.
