Mindy's Minute

MINDY’S MINUTE
Moorpark, Calif. - (August 22, 2006) After a hot, muggy and eventually
soggy Sunday afternoon at Memphis Motorsports Park, NHRA put a halt on the day’s
events until Monday for the O’Reilly Mid-South NHRA Nationals. The skies
opened up right before the first round was eventually over with only one pair of
Pro Stock Motorcycles to go.
When racing resumed on Monday, the Top Fuel class saw Ringers supporter
Hillary Will in her first final of her professional Top Fuel career.
She met one of her teammates, Doug Kalitta, at the line. Will had a great
reaction time at the Tree over Kalitta, but he tracked her down to record a
4.604/313.95 mph run to the 26-year-old Will’s 4.644/312.13 mph run.
Tony Pedregon has had a consistent season and worked his way up through the
POWERade point standings to third place. As long as he keeps making it to
the money rounds, he will give point’s leader John Force and second place Ron
Capps a run for their money.
On Monday, Pedregon met his former boss John Force in finals. While they
both left at the same time, Force’s flopper was quicker than Pedregon’s Q
Racing Monte Carlo, which smoked the tires down track.
Two Ringers teams battled each other in Pro Stock finals and one of them was
the current point’s leader.
For the third race in a row, Jason Line took on a different competitor in
Pro Stock finals. In Memphis, it was Kurt Johnson. But like Brainerd, Line
didn’t have the racing gods in his favor.
Like last weekend in Brainerd, Line had the quicker car, but was beaten on
the infamous holeshot. K.J. took the win over point leader Line,
6.718/204.42 to 6.703/205.38 mph to pick up his first win at Memphis. There are only
three tracks on the current schedule that K.J. hasn’t won at.
Another switcheroo in points took place in the Pro Stock Motorcycle
category. Memphis finalist Antron Brown took the lead last week with his victory in
Brainerd, but this week saw the reigning champion regain the point.
Andrew Hines was handed his second win of the season after Brown jumped the
gun on the Tree. Brown fell to second in points, but only by three points.
All the NHRA straight liners will have a week off to test and regroup for
the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, August
30 through September 4.
NASCAR Nextel Cup Series – GFS Marketplace 400 – Michigan International
Speedway, Brooklyn, Mich.
While both Penske Racing South teammates Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman led
during the GFS Marketplace 400 on Sunday, their time out front was unfortunately
limited and seemed to doom the both of them as the day progressed.
Michigan is usually a good track for Newman, who qualified fourth for the
race. During the race, Newman’s Alltel Fastap No. 12 Dodge had a reasonable
size hole knocked into his grill, resulting in a not so cooperative race car
for Newman. He settled for a 25th place finish.
Busch on the other hand had a couple run-in’s with Michigan’s retaining
walls and on lap 127, Busch and his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge was involved in a
wreck, ending his day, handing him a 40th place finish.
Ringers supporter Todd Kluever made his second start in Nextel Cup action at
Michigan, but only 10 laps into the race, he was involved in a wreck with
Bobby Labonte and David Stremme, retiring him for the rest of the race.
Kluever was scored 43rd.
NASCAR Busch Series – CARFAX 250 – Michigan International Speedway,
Brooklyn, Mich.
Jason Leffler took the honors of leading the Ringers supporting racers to
the checkered flag in the CARFAX 250 on Saturday in 13th. Penske Racing’s Kurt
Busch pulled double-duty over the weekend. He qualified sixth for the
race, but the changing affects of the track foiled the team, as well a late spin
in the race when Busch came into contact with Denny Hamlin. Busch was forced
to start at the tail end of the longest line and wound up finishing 21st.
Todd Kluever’s bad weekend started on Saturday in the Busch race. Kluever’
s No. 06 3M Performance Finish Ford Fusion suffered transmission problems and
was parked on lap 120, resulting in a 37th place finish.
