ARCA Trucks and C.A.R.S. Open Racing Program at DuQuoin
Trucks and C.A.R.S. open the 84th annual DuQuoin State Fair and it’s yearly
auto racing program with the Best Western-DuQuoin 50 and Best Western
Challenge as the Automobile Racing Club of America Lincoln Welders Truck
Series and the Crate American Racing Series Late Models visit the “Magic
Mile” on Sunday, August 26. Best Western Hotels, the official Hotel of
NASCAR and corporate partner of Track Enterprises is the presenting sponsor
of the truck event.
This marks the fourth scheduled appearance for the ARCA Lincoln Welders
Truck Series on the Magic Mile as then rookie Brian Rowe bested a field of
16 other competitors to take the inaugural truck race under the new DuQuoin
lights in 2003. Unfortunately, the 2004 and 2005 events fell victim to
Mother Nature with last season’s event getting wet just prior to lining up
the DuQuoin 50 for the ARCA trucks.
The fourth Best Western-DuQuoin 50 marks the second of three dirt
appearances for the trucks in 2006, the first coming on the Springfield Mile
at the Illinois State Fairgrounds one week prior to DuQuoin, and another in
the first week of September at the famed Eldora Speedway. Leading the ARCA
trucks to DuQuoin is current ARCA Lincoln Welders point leader Paul Hahn.
Hahn, of Canton, Michigan drives a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado in the series and
by virtue of 2 wins in 2006 has a 145-point lead (after the Winchester
event) over John Kasmierski of Toledo, Ohio. Third in points with one win in
2006 is former truck champ Bill Withers of Columbus, Ohio followed by
youngster Kyle Partridge of Newport, Michigan and rookie Nick Gullatta of
Cleveland Ohio.
However, the sixth place driver may be the odds on favorite to win the Best
Western-DuQuoin 50. Clarksburg, West Virginia driver Norm Weaver is the
lone Toyota driver in the Lincoln Welders series and scored an emotional win
in the Best Western Classic at the Illinois State fairgrounds this past
Saturday. the fifty-three year old Weaver led the last 27 miles to give
Toyota it's first ever win in the ARCA trucks and gave Weaver his first ARCA
win after 42 tries.
Two-time ARCA truck champ Robbin Slaughter of Columbus, Ohio is expected at
DuQuoin as is former DuQuoin modified competitor Steve Christman of Fort
Wayne, Indiana.
For the first time in history the trucks are joined by the fledgling Crate
American Racing Series late model stock cars, a series based in Southern
Illinois that sanctions late model stock car events at various tracks in
Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri. The Best Western 20 marks the
first appearance of the CARS sanctioned late models, a series developed by
racers and promoters to address the need for affordable automobile racing.
Utilizing engines supplied by General Motors, the power plants meet certain
criteria and are sealed at the factory that does not allow for upgrades or
tampering by the crews. The ‘crate’ racing concept is one that is quickly
growing in various sanctioning bodies and regions throughout the U.S.Up for
grabs for the CARS series champion in 2006 is a guaranteed $10,000 first
prize for winning the national title as well as a brand new C.J. Rayburn
chassis for the person who captures the CARS title.
The current CARS point leader is 25-year-old Jeff Walston of Paducah,
Kentucky who has several wins in 2006 to his credit. Right behind Walston in
the title chase is Southern Illinois resident Danny Jolly of West Frankfort,
a driver who has several track titles to his credit including one at
Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City. Others in the top ten in the
CARS point chase include Ray Emling, Jr. of DuQuoin, Daniel Heck of Mt.
Vernon, Chad Burks, Steve Cole of Christopher, Aaron Heck of Mt. Vernon,
Brent Burnett of Lowes, Kentucky, Larry Grisham of Raleigh, Illinois and
Chuck Still of Benton, Illinois. Southern Illinois drivers Louie Baker, Jr.
and Ed Purcell of DuQuoin, Nick Lyons of Centralia, Scott Hutchinson and Jay
Parks of Marion, Shane Cockrum of Benton and ARCA RE/MAX driver Joe Cooksey
of Centralia are all participants in the 2006 CARS series.
Gates open at 9 a.m. with qualifications at approximately 11 and the flying
start of the Best Western-DuQuoin 50 at 2 p.m. The CARS Best Western
Challenge late model feature will precede the main event for the ARCA
Lincoln Welders trucks and the CARS late models will be racing for a $1,500
first prize for capturing the 20 mile Best Western Challenge. Tickets can
be obtained by calling the DuQuoin State Fair Box office at 618-542-1535,
