"HALL OF FAME CLASSIC" THIS WEEKEND AT ANGELL PARK;

COTTLE TAKES "INDIANA MIDGET WEEK" TITLE;

16-YEAR-OLD BACON TRIUMPHS AT KOKOMO

            Jerry Coons Jr. leads the USAC National Midget Series to this weekend's National Midget Auto Racing "Hall of Fame Classic" at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis. The unique two-night format calls for the USAC National Midgets to compete Saturday night and the Badger Midget Series to compete Sunday night with an overall champion crowned. Coons holds 56-point lead over Bryan Clauson as a result of "Indiana Midget Week" events conducted last week in the Hoosier state.

            Coons posted a second and a ninth in the races at Gas City and Kokomo respectively, while Clauson was 21st and seventh in the two features.

            Shane Cottle of Kokomo, Ind. captured Friday's 30-lapper at Gas City I-69 Speedway and his fourth-place finish at Kokomo Speedway Sunday night gave him the "Indiana Midget Week" championship. He trailed Brad Mosen for four laps at Gas City, then led the final 26 laps in his Pace Brothers/Burke & Pace Lumber Beast/Chevy. Coons, Tracy Hines, Brad Kuhn and Jay Drake complete the "top-five."

            Sixteen-year-old Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, Okla. led the final 25 laps of Sunday's 30-lapper at Kokomo in his Keizer Wheels/Tel-Star Communications Eagle/Esslinger Ford. The victory established an all-time record for the highest car number ever to win a USAC feature race as he piloted #999! He was trailed by Jon Stanbrough, Jeremy Warren, Cottle and Dave Darland. Warren led the first five laps.

            Saturday night's USAC race at Sun Prairie, Wis. features the best of both USAC and Badger, including defending race winner Scott Hatton of Roscoe, Ill. The annual National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will follow in the track's first-turn pavilion on Sunday afternoon.
