August 21, 2006 (Minot, SD) I has been a rough 45 days for the NOS Energy
Drink/Mafia Motorsports team.  It's not that the team and it's rookie driver
Jason Martin have not been fast, no it's been everthing else in between.
Involved in crashes that were not of his making, minor mechanical failures
and even a night where the yongster was so sick after the race he fell down
flat while getting out of the car and be assisted by the crew.  Well all of
that changed this past Saturday night when the Liberal, KS native brought
the NOS Energy Drink/Mafia Motorsports Maxim home for a 9th place finish.
Drawing a late number in qualifying, Martin still managed a 15th place time.

 

In the 2nd heat, Martin would take the lead over current points leader Donny
Schatz and maintain over a straight away lead when it seemed his old friend
lady bad luck wouold surface.  The left rear tire developed a leak and on
the final lap Schatz would get by but Martin would finish 2nd and transfer
to the feature.  Martin would start 13th in the feature and use the low side
of the track to climb to 11th when the caution would come out as Donny
Schatz had blown a right rear while leading.  Martin would stay conservative
and while other drivers would drop out with blow tires Martin would
capitalize and when the checkers flew the NOS Energy Drink/Mafia Motorsports
Maxim would come home 9th.  

 

"That feels good." Said a happy Martin. "We guessed right tonight.  We took
on a lot harder tire than everyone else and new we just had to bide our time
and the finish would come to us.  On a harder tire your really loose so I
could not chance running high and going off the track.  Sometimes in these
deals it's better to be slower at the start and have the track come to you.
We have learned a lot this season and tonights finish is due to gaining that
experience out here.  It is not always the fastest car that wins these deals
but the one that makes the right calls when preparing the car.  I hope this
is the start of good things for the rest of the season."
