Calaman, Billet and Dove Win at SSP on Friday Night
Newberrytown, PA (August 18, 2006) - On Friday night at the Susquehanna Speedway Park, Dave Calaman picked up his third Trail Motors Super Sportman win of the season. Carl Billet picked up the Late Model feature win after a rough past two weeks of racing. Steve Dove battled Chad Smith to the end and was victorious in the Street Stock division. Jeff Svendson won the Speedway Auto Sales Mini Van Construction race.
In the Trail Motors Super Sportsman feature, Steve Wilbur jumped out to the early lead from the pole position. Dave Calaman overtook Wilbur on the seventeenth lap and held on for the win. Rich Eichelberger was able to get by Wilbur on the last circuit and had to settle for second. Wilbur finished third with Frankie Herr coming home fourth after starting back in the 14th position. Jason Fry finished fifth. Calaman, Fry and Jim Shuttlesworth won the qualifying heat races and Steve Fannasy won the consolation race. Rusty Rupp and Kevin Yiengst both competed for the first time in a Super Sportsman on Friday night.
Carl Billet jumped out to the quick lead from outside the front row and lead every lap to pick up the Late Model feature. Billet won by a straighaway in an event that had only one caution flag on lap 10. Twenty one of the twenty four starters finished the race at the end. Gene Knaub finished in second followed by Gene Wrightstone, Larry Baer and Carl Graves rounded out the top five. Chuck Yingling, Randy Christine, Jr., and Billet won their qualifying heat races. Jake Lettich won the consolation. Tom Slusser Jr. also made his first ever start in a Late Model.
In Street Stock action, Steven Dove grabbed the lead from his pole position and picked up the win by leading every lap for his first win in the division. However, Dove's victory was no where near as easy at it appears. Dove's lead was never more than two or three car lengths at any time. Chad Smith battled with Dove side by side and actually passed him a few times, but Smith was unable to hold the lead when they crossed the start/finish line. Smith had to settle for second place. Eric Walker, Bob Gutshall and George Eash completed the top five. Dove also picked up the heat race victory along with Chad Smith and Doug Hoffman. Rick Yohn won the consolation event.
Jeff Svendson won the Speedway Auto Sales Mini Van Construction race over Daryl Sipe. David Olson, George Danner and Scott Hughes competed the top five.
