MINDY’S MINUTE
Brickyard 400, Kroger Speedfest and a little Drag Racing
Moorpark, Calif. - (August 9, 2006) All three NASCAR series visited the
racing capital of the world, Indianapolis, over the weekend for the Brickyard
400 for the Nextel Cup Series and Kroger Speedfest for the Craftsman Truck
Series and the Busch Series.
NASCAR Nextel Cup Series – Allstate 400 at the Brickyard – Indianapolis
Motor Speedway, Indianapolis, Ind.
The Ringers team of Penske Racing South and its drivers Kurt Busch and Ryan
Newman both had top-10 qualifying efforts for the race at the historical
track. Busch qualified third for the race while teammate Newman started eighth.
However, during the final practice on Saturday, Busch blew a left front
tire, sending his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge into the wall, resulting in his team
pulling out a backup car for the race and forcing him to start at the rear of
the field on Sunday.
Both Penske Dodges fought handling woes throughout the entire race and after
a lengthy review of the finish, sparred by a chaotic, multi-wreck when
winner Jimmie Johnson was coming to the checkers, Busch was scored 12th and
Newman, 13th.
NASCAR Busch Series – Kroger 200 – O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis,
Clermont, Ind.
The Busch Series ran at ORP the night before the 400 on Saturday night under
the lights at the newly renamed .686-mile track.
Paul Menard was the highest finishing Ringers supporting racer in ninth
place, with fellow UnderX by Ringers supporter Jason Leffler finishing 19th.
Todd Kluever, using DriverX by Ringers, fought an ill-handling car throughout
the race. He qualified 24th for the race and ended up finishing there as well.
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series – Power Stroke Diesel 200 presented by Ford
and International – O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, Clermont, Ind.
The Ringers team of Orleans Racing had a great run going throughout the
race, until lap 143 when Kerry Earnhardt got a little anxious and moved Brendan
Gaughan out of his way, causing a pileup in turn one. Gaughan was able to
continue and salvage a 16th-place finish.
The other Ringers team in the field, the No. 15 of Billy Ballew Motorsports,
didn’t have the best race either. A sour transmission ended the team’s
night early on lap 148.
Other Racing
Ringers racer Bud Kaeding picked up another USAC Silver Crown Series win at
the Terre Haute Action Track on Saturday night. Kaeding endured a caution
and red flag filled 100-lap event to take home the hardware and the money in
the end. Fellow Ringers supporter Justin Allgaier came home in ninth.
NHRA Top Fuel regular Morgan Lucas returned to his racing roots for the
third weekend in a row in his Top Alcohol Dragster. This was the second weekend
in a row he raced at Infineon Raceway.
Lucas picked up his second win in two weeks in his family-owned Lucas Oil
A-Fuel dragster. He defeated Ashley Force 5.352/261.37 mph to Force’s
5.658/253.95 mph run. Lucas, along with both his Top Fuel and A-Fuel team head to
Brainerd, Minn., this weekend for the Silver Anniversary Lucas Oil NHRA
Nationals, also the track where Lucas made his first NHRA Top Fuel start two years
ago.
On Monday night, Ringers supporter Kenny Jacobs took home the $5,000
paycheck at the Front Row Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
The races in Osky are the unofficial kickoff to the renowed Knoxville
Nationals just up the road in Knoxville, Iowa.
Ringers Gloves would also like to recognize a couple of our racers that have
already brought home championships this season.
Jonathan Allard, who finished eighth in the Front Row Challenge in Osky on
Monday night, is the first driver from Chico, Calif., to bring home a Golden
State Challenge Series King of California Championship. Allard claimed seven
victories in the 19-race series, as well as 10 quick time awards on his way
to his first GSC Championship.
Southern California racer Jeff Williams was named the West Coast Pro Truck
champion at Irwindale Speedway. Congratulations to Jeff and his JW Racing
team!
