LUCAS, HOUGH SCORE WINS AT INFINEON RACEWAY'S LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES
SONOMA, Calif. - NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors
converged on Infineon Raceway this weekend for the second time in as many
weeks, first for the NHRA national event and this week for the divisional
race, and Morgan Lucas scored the Top Alcohol Dragster trophies at both of
them. Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Brian Hough joined Lucas in the winner's
circle this weekend.
Lucas, who resides in Brownsburg, Ind., came into eliminations
as the No. 4 qualifier and made his best run of the weekend, 5.320 seconds,
265.74 mph, in the first round to advance to the semis where he faced No. 1
qualifier Duane Shields, Boulder City, Nev. Lucas was on his game against
Shields, beating him on a hole shot with a 5.378-second, 262.03 mph pass to
Shields' 5.369-second, 263.10 mph effort. In the final, he took on Ashley
Force, the 22-year-old daughter of 13-time NHRA Funny Car champion John
Force. Lucas' 5.352-second, 261.37 mph run was more than enough to cover
Force's 5.658-second, 253.95 mph effort. The two Top Alcohol Dragster
outings are Lucas' first since he began competing in NHRA's Top Fuel class.
He is currently eighth in the NHRA PowerAde points standings.
For Hough, a Junction City, Ore., resident, this was his third
final-round appearance in as many races. In the opening round of
eliminations he laid down a 5.624-second, 255.68 mph run, beating Mark
Woznichak, Riverside, Calif. In the semis his 5.654-second, 254.76 mph run
beat John Weaver of Newport Beach, Calif. In the final he took on No. 1
qualifier Steve Gasparrelli, West Covina, Calif. Hough outpaced Gasparrelli
with a 5.639-second, 255.68 mph run to Gasparrelli's 5.682-second, 257.73
mph effort.
Tom Mettler, Bakersfield, Calif., earned the win in Comp
Eliminator, Glenn Snow, St. George, Utah, scored his second Super Stock
trophy of the year, and San Dimas, Calif., racer Leo Glasbrenner was the
Stock Eliminator winner. In Super Comp, former NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League
racer Kyle Rizzoli of San Luis Obispo, Calif., was the winner while in Super
Gas Tim Landis of Glendale, Ariz., outlasted the field. Super Street driver
Larry Burnitzki, Porterville Calif., took the win along with Sportsman
Motorcycle rider Dave Phillips of Las Vegas, and Super Eliminator driver
Shannon Chennault of Highland, Calif.
NHRA Pacific division racers head to Bakersfield, Calif., for
the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Auto Club Famoso Raceway
will host the Lucas Oil Series August 25 and 26.
