NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series-Friday from Infineon Raceway

NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES - WEST CENTRAL DIVISION

            SONOMA, Calif. - In the first rounds of qualifying at Infineon
Raceway's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event presented by Korbel, Top
Alcohol Dragster driver Duane Shield was the top qualifier and in Top
Alcohol Funny Car, Steve Gasparrelli took the No. 1 qualifying position.  On
the first day of racing at the three-day event there were 16 Top Alcohol
Dragsters and 15 Top Alcohol Funny Cars competing for eight qualifying spots
in each class.

Shields, a Boulder City, Nev., resident, made a 5.304-second, 268.97 mph
pass to set the pace in Top Alcohol Dragster.  Ashley Force, the 23-year-old
daughter of 13-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force, opened qualifying in
the No. 2 spot with a .5.344-second, 267.53 mph pass.

Gasparrelli, of West Covina, Calif., clocked with a 5.628-second, 259.71 mph
pass, putting him in the top position.  Second-place qualifier, Brian Hough
of Junction City, Ore., ran 5.657 seconds at 257.68 mph.

David Beckley of Wildomar, Calif., set the pace in Comp Eliminator while
Brian McClanahan, Alta Loma, Calif., was the best qualifier in Super Stock.
Palmdale, Calif., racer Don Keen was the top qualifier in Stock Eliminator,
Shawn Cowie of Richmond, B.C., led the Top Comp category and Sportsman
Motorcycle's John Widman, Garberville, Calif., was the No. 1 qualifier in
his class.

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Infineon Raceway.  Gates
open at 7 a.m. both days and qualifying and time trials are slated to
continue at 8 a.m. Saturday.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
will have two runs, at noon and 4 p.m.  Eliminations will start at 8 a.m.
Sunday.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round
at noon.

            Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event
presented by Korbel are $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday.  Children 12 and under
are admitted free.
