NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES - NORTH CENTRAL DIVISION

ST. LOUIS - Gateway International Raceway is hosting its first
NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event this weekend. The three-day race
kicked off today in spectacular style with Bill Reichert breaking the
track's Top Alcohol Dragster elapsed time record. Reichert's effort put him
squarely in the No. 1 qualifying spot while Jeff Burnett set a strong pace
in Top Alcohol Funny Car. On the opening day of action, there are 13 Top
Alcohol Dragsters and 10 Top Alcohol Funny Cars vying for eight qualifying
spots in each class.
Reichert's record-setting 5.305-second, 274.27 mph pass put the
Owosso, Mich., racer a full tenth of a second ahead of No. 2 qualifier Dave
Heitzman of Grand Rapids, Ohio. Heitzman ran 5.409 seconds at 257.68 mph.
Burnett, a Brownsburg, Ind., resident, also has a tenth of a
second on the second-place qualifier. Burnett made a 5.718-second, 252.43
mph pass while reigning division Top Alcohol Funny Car champ Mick Snyder,
Demotte, Ind., ran 5.816 seconds at 249.39 mph to put him in the No. 2 slot.
Brian Browell, Lafayette, Ind., set the pace in Comp Eliminator while
Madisonville, Ky., resident Robin Brown led the Super Stock contingent. The
No. 1 qualifier in Stock Eliminator was Bert Morgan, Charleston, Ill., and
Earl Folse was the best qualifier in Top Sportsman.
Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Gateway Int'l Raceway.
Gates open at 7 a.m. both days and qualifying and time trials will start at
10 a.m. Saturday. Eliminations are slated to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday. Top
Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have two qualifying runs on
Saturday, at 6 and 9 p.m., and will start first round of eliminations on
Sunday at 1 p.m.
Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are $20
Saturday and $20 Sunday. A Saturday/Sunday ticket is $35 and children 12 and
under are admitted free with a paid adult.
Gateway International Raceway is located in Madison, Ill., five
minutes from downtown St. Louis at the intersections of Interstates 55/70
