CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT O'REILLY JR. WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS
DENVER, Colo. - Racing is complete at the NHRA O'Reilly Auto Parts Jr.
Drag Racing League Western Conference Finals. Eight individual
champions along with one Team Champion have been crowned and awarded a
Wally Trophy as well as a share of the $98,000 purse in savings bonds.
Host track, Team Bandimere #2, was crowned Team Champion with each
member taking home a $300 savings bond and a Wally trophy.
Local racer, Shellah Winter of Littleton, Colo., finished on top
outlasting the field in the 16-17 year-old category. Chad Axford from
Carmichael, Calif., took home a Wally trophy in the 15 year-old category
with a pass of 8.25 seconds at 76.95 mph.
Josh Burrow of Forney, Texas held off Amber Ottens of Centennial, Colo.,
making it to the winner's circle in the 8-9 year-old category. 10
year-old racer, Tristen "Chigger" Johnson of Jordon, Texas, finished the
day strong winning over Carson Combs of Brighton, Colo.
11 year-old, Rodney McClendon of Mustang, Okla., finished on top with a
pass of 9.029 seconds at 71.38 mph. Kristen Matusek of Olathe, Kan.,
finished first in the 12 year-old category over Zack Salo of Billings,
Mont., making a pass of 9.097 at 72.79 mph.
Other winners included 13 year-old, Joey Hughes of Phoenix, Ariz.,
winning over Shannon Stensvad of Grand Lake, Colo., and 14 year-old John
Calvart of Lancaster, Calif., who ran 7.965 at 78.90 mph beating out
Benjamin Hilton of Vancouver, Wash.
ESPN 2 taped the entire event and will air the show on September 14th at
2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
