Washington DC July 28, 2006; The AIADA newsletter reported that President Bush said in a speech yesterday that the U.S. is making good progress on plug-in hybrid battery technology that would allow drivers to travel 40 miles without using any gasoline.
Experts and auto manufacturers say high sales of plug-ins are likely a long way off -- and no vehicle on the market can go nearly that far on battery power alone, reports The Detroit News.
President Bush also laid out his ideas for ensuring that the U.S. remains an economic leader, chief among those was the extension of the R&D tax credit. "We've got to remain competitive. We've got to make the R&D tax credit permanent," he said.
