Beam/Canadian Club Join Local Orgs to Fight Underage Drinking

THE MICHAEL ANDRETTI FOUNDATION, BEAM GLOBAL SPIRITS & WINE, INC. AND CANADIAN CLUBŪ JOIN LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS TO FIGHT UNDERAGE DRINKING IN MICHIGAN

65% of Teens Get Alcohol from Family and Friends

WHAT

The Michael Andretti Foundation, Beam Global Spirits & Wine, Inc. and Canadian ClubŪ will launch a campaign designed to encourage parents to talk with their teens about the dangers of underage drinking.

The goal of the initiative is to raise awareness among parents about how their teens get the alcohol they drink and emphasize the importance of talking to their teens about the dangers of underage drinking. The key components to the campaign are a 30 second TV PSA, buttons and informational cards for parents to be distributed at the point of purchase.

WHY

A recent survey commissioned by The Century Council, a national not-for-profit organization funded by the nation's leading distillers to fight drunk driving and underage drinking, revealed that 65% of underage youth who drink obtain alcohol from family and friends, with or without permission.  The survey also shows 7% of youth report that they obtained alcohol from retailers who failed to check for identification. According to the 2004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (SAMHSA), over 30% of 12-20 year olds reported past month alcohol consumption in Michigan.

In Michigan, 812 youths under the age of 18 were arrested for driving under the influence, 5,071 youths were arrested for liquor law violations, and 16 youths were arrested for drunkenness last year (UCR 2004).
