PUTZ, JONES ON WINNING STREAK IN NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES
GREAT BEND, Kan. - SRCA Dragstrip's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series event, which kicked off Friday, concluded today when more than 400
drivers in nine categories made their way through elimination rounds. In
the end, Richard Putz led the Top Alcohol Dragster class and Jimmy Jones put
his mark on Top Alcohol Funny Car. Both drivers were No. 1 qualifiers in
their categories.
Putz, a resident of Earlville, Iowa, scored his second
consecutive win, outrunning Jeff Hamelink of Savage, Minn., in the final
round. Putz laid down a 5.729-second, 245.76 mph pass to Hamelink's
5.815-second, 246.12 mph effort. Putz's best run of the day came in the
semifinals when he ran 5.694 seconds at 247.02 mph against Jared Dreher of
Clinton, Ind., who red-lighted.
For Jones, who resides in Cleburne, Texas, and claims NHRA's
South Central region as his "home" division, this marked his fourth
final-round appearance in five races and his second straight win. He made a
6.028-second, 240.77 mph pass in the final to beat Glenwood, Iowa's Kirk
Williams who is also coming off a win at the West Central division's last
event.
In Comp Eliminator, Todd Patterson, Augusta, Kan., took the win
over Colt Mikel of Hempstead, Texas. Super Stock racer David Bogner,
Kearney, Neb., racked up his second consecutive win in his third final-round
appearance against Carroll Warling, Arvada, Colo. In Stock Eliminator,
Brett Speer, Ottertail, Minn., made his way to the winner's circle by
winning his final-round match-up against Mike Cotton, Broken Arrow, Okla.,
and John Abbott Jr. earned the Super Comp win over Larry Piper, Wamego, Kan.
Bryan Chaney, Claremore, Okla., took the Super Gas trophy, beating Michael
Miller, Santa Fe, N.M., in the final while Brent Stifflear, Lakewood, Colo.,
made his second straight final-round appearance in Super Street and got the
win over Randall Cleveland of Brighton, Colo. Joining them in the winner's
circle in the Sportsman Motorcycle class presented by Harley Davidson, was
Alex Barmettler, Maplewood, Minn., who beat Jeff Lanoue, Zimmerman, Minn.,
in the final.
West Central division racers head to Heartland Park Topeka
(Kan.) for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, August 25 and
26. The two-day race is the second of two slated for Topeka and will be the
fifth out of six on the division's calendar.
