FINAL QUALIFYING IN THE BOOKS AT SRCA DRAGSTRIP’S LUCAS OIL SERIES RACE

GREAT BEND, Kan. – Qualifying is complete at the NHRA Lucas Oil
Drag Racing Series event at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip. Racers in nine classes will
begin eliminations Sunday morning. Richard Putz led qualifiers, setting the
pace in Top Alcohol Dragster. In Top Alcohol Funny Car Jimmy Jones was the
No. 1 qualifier.

Earlville, Iowa’s Putz did not run in Friday’s opening session
but in his second run today he made a 5.682-second, 248.39 mph pass to move
ahead of Jeff Hamelink of Savage, Minn. Hamelink did not improve on his
qualifying numbers from Friday and finished in the No. 2 spot. Putz will
take on No. 8 qualifier Troy Kaiser of Littleton, Colo., in the first round
of eliminations.

Jones, a pharmacist from Cleburne, Texas, also made his first
qualifying passes today. In his second run he laid down a 60.88-second,
240.68 mph pass to take the top position. Friday’s top qualifier, Kirk
Williams, Glenwood, Iowa, did improve on his initial qualifying effort but
not enough to outpace Jones. Because the qualifying field is one car short,
Jones will have a bye run in the first round of eliminations.

In Comp Eliminator, David Eaton, Merritt Island, Fla., kept his
No. 1 qualifier title as did Darren Wall, Littleton, Colo., in Super Stock.
Jerry Pomilla, Conroe, Texas, also refused to relinquish his top qualifier
status in the Sportsman Motorcycle class presented by Harley Davidson. In
Stock Eliminator, Tony Hernandez of Denver overtook the top spot.

Racing continues Sunday at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip. Gates open at 7 a.m. and
eliminations are slated to start 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top
Alcohol Funny Car will run first round of eliminations at noon.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event are $15
Sunday. Students with valid ID get a $5 discount and children 12 and under
are admitted free.
