KJ Steps Up, Will Start Second in Seattle
Event: 19th Annual Schuck's Auto Supply Nationals
Day/Date: Saturday, July 22, 2006
Location: Pacific Raceways, Kent, WA
After posting the seventh-quickest time during the opening day of
qualifying for the Schuck's Auto Supply Nationals in Kent, WA, Pro Stock
standout Kurt Johnson was determined to improve his position in one of
his final two timed runs on Saturday. Despite the increased humidity,
KJ took full advantage of the clouds and slightly cooler conditions in
the morning session, with his ACDelco Cobalt rocketing through the
quarter-mile in 6.696-seconds with a top speed of 206.07 mph, which was
the quickest pass of the day among the 22 Pro Stock cars making an
attempt. This earned the Georgia racer the second starting spot for
Sunday's final eliminations at Pacific Raceways, as he looks to defend
his win from this event a year ago.
"The bottom line is that we made a good run when we needed to, which is
what this sport is all about. Naturally, you want to hit a home run
every time out, but that's just not going to happen. This morning,
however, everybody did their job, we made a few changes at the last
minute going into the run that really paid off, and we were quick enough
to get the second starting spot.
"Our ACDelco Cobalt has been good all weekend. It's been going
straight, low gear has been nice, there's no (tire) shake, the clutch
has been good, and I've been pretty good on the lights. I guess it all
comes down to being back at sea level, which allowed us to get back to
basics. We have a pretty good notebook as far as what to do under these
conditions, so we believe we're going to have a pretty good race
tomorrow."
