HAMELINK, WILLIAMS LEAD EARLY QUALIFIERS AT SRCA DRAGSTRIP’S LUCAS OIL EVENT

            GREAT BEND, Kan. – Thunder on the Plains, a round of the NHRA
Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, kicked off with qualifying and time trials
today to S.R.C.A. Dragstrip.  The event will continue through the weekend,
culminating in eliminations on Sunday.  In early rounds of qualifying at the
event, Jeff Hamelink led the Top Alcohol Dragster field and Kirk Williams
set the pace in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

            Hamelink, a Savage, Minn., resident, made a 5.688-second lap at
249.49 mph to put him ahead of No. 2 qualifier Robin Samsel, Marion, Ind.,
who ran 5.958 seconds at 249.49 mph.  Glenwood, Iowa’s Williams laid down a
6.160-second, 235.76 mph run to take the top spot.  Bruce Carlson, Prior
Lake, Minn., came in behind Williams with a 6.273-second run at 220.58 mph

Top qualifiers in other classes were David Eaton, Merritt Island, Fla., in
Comp Eliminator; Darren Wall, Littleton, Colo., in Super Stock; Gregory
Greening, Columbia, Mo., in Stock Eliminator; and Jerry Pomilla, Conroe,
Texas, in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip.
Gates open at 7 a.m. each day.  Qualifying and time trials continue Saturday
at noon and eliminations are slated for 8 a.m. Sunday.  Top Alcohol Dragster
and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have two more qualifying passes on Saturday
and will run first round of eliminations Sunday at noon.

            Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event are $15
Saturday and $15 Sunday.  Students with valid ID get a $5 discount and
children 12 and under are admitted free. 

            S.R.C.A. Dragstrip is located at 455 W. Barton County Road; 2½
miles west of Great Bend on the old Air Force base.  For more information
