SCCA Soloists Beat The Heat in Denver
For Immediate Release
Hot Times A Mile High:
Denver Tour Soloists Beat The Heat At DIA
DENVER, Colo. (July 19, 2006) - 100 degree heat challenges even the most
diehard of competitors, but 222 soloists would not be denied the
opportunity to compete on the concrete at Denver International Airport
for Round Nine of The Tire Rack(r) SCCA Solo National Tour.
Courses were described as moderately fast, with Sunday's unique course
by Kevin Wenzel requiring a bit more discipline than the Saturday
opener. While 18 states were represented, more than half of the trophies
stayed in Colorado.
After having his streak of top-two finishes broken at Milwaukee, Andy
Hollis, of Austin, Texas, got back to his winning ways in Denver, taking
the Street Touring(r) S2 class win in his Soulspeed/ART/GRM Mazda Miata
over Enrique Garcia, of Seattle, in his Bacon.com/Team DHR Miata. It is
Hollis' third win on the season to go with three seconds and one third.
His three-win total is tied for tops with six other competitors, three
of which were also in Denver.
Greg Reno, of Lawrence, Kan., topped a tough G Stock field in his
MiniUSA/Baron Mini/Kumho Mini Cooper S to earn his third win of the
season. Reno set quick time on both Saturday and Sunday for the class,
and topped second-place Graeme Weston-Lewis by 0.801-second. Reno's
other wins came at Walnut Ridge and Milwaukee.
Paul Costas, of San Antonio, Texas, trailed Mike Minear, of Hudson,
Colo., after Saturday's runs, but came back on Sunday to take his third
win of the season in the Witchdoctor Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro over
Minear by 0.694-second. Costas also won at Walnut Ridge and in Houston.
Ann Hollis, also of Austin, Texas, kept pace with husband Andy by taking
her third win of the season. Previous wins for Ann came in STXL in
Houston and STS2L at Atwater. But this weekend, it was G Stock Ladies
for Hollis in the "Thanks Brandt" Mini Cooper S by more than two seconds
over the rest of the field.
Other three-time winners on the 2006 Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Tour
season, but not participating in Denver, are Velma Boreen, Lisa Frankel
and Sam Strano.
David Fauth, of Centennial, Colo., trailed Monument's Paul Leonard after
Saturday's action in D Street Prepared, but he recovered nicely on
Sunday to take the win by 0.328-second in his BimmerHaus/Hoosier BMW
325is.
E Street Prepared had the close finish, as Mark Madarash, of Red Oak,
Texas, edged Tom Kotzian, of Gladstone, Ore., by just 0.061-second on
his final run in his Pontiac Trans-Am. It was Madarash's second win of
the 2006 Tour.
However, tightest competition for the win went to D Stock, where Kinch
Reindl, of Denver, drove his RiptideHosting.com Acura Integra Type R to
a 0.002-second win over fellow Coloradan Mark Alan Smith in his SCR
Performance/Ska Brew Volkswagen.
The parking lots of Denver International Airport will again be busy this
weekend, with better weather predicted for Round Seven of The Tire
Rack(r) SCCA ProSolo National Series.
The final regular-season round of The Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Tour
will be held Aug. 12-13 in Packwood, Wash. For program information
