Mosport Report

OSCAAR OUTLAW SUPER LATE MODEL RACING

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

John Fletcher Captures 3rd Win at Mosport Speedway
By Don McLeod and Sandy Macfarlane
July 17, 2006
John Fletcher from Milton, Ontario, dominated the 50 lap OSCAAR feature race at Mosport Speedway on Saturday, July 15. Starting on the outside pole, Fletcher quickly took the lead in a lightening fast JNE Consulting #61 Outlaw car. Good heat race results, leading the entire feature and outstanding pit crew support allowed Fletcher to pull off another great night in the points, picking up 328 out of a possible 330. Team #61 and Fletcher now have a 122 point lead in the 2006 standings. "It was an awesome car!" said John, "I give a lot of credit to Cunningham Racing Engines. Gary and his family put a lot of work into their engines and it pays."
In agreement with Fletcher is Pee Wee Evans who finished the feature race in 2nd. Also running with a Cunningham engine, Evans arrived with the Bowens Automotive #90 team ready to make up for a missed opportunity three weeks earlier due to brake failure. Even the adversity of re-starting at the back twice didn't hold Evans from accomplishing an OSCAAR career best finish. "Racing a dirt car last night helped! I was at Ohsweken in a sportsman modified car." said, Pee Wee, "Tonight I worked my way up from the back twice. The additional car control came easier after racing dirt last night. I want to thank all my sponsors including Cunningham Racing Engines."
Taking home a third straight podium finish was Shane Maginnis who crossed the finish line 3rd. Certainly happy to escape the wrecks, Shane admitted, "The car can do better. We continue to have tire issues so we'll have to do some homework for Sauble. We intend to arrive at the Beach with a whole new set-up". The Kerr Cadillac Goodwrench Service #03 Outlaw moved quickly to 2nd spot behind Fletcher, challenging at times but then dropping off the pace and eventually surrendering 2nd to Evans. Another good points night for the #03 team saw them jump 4 spots to 6th in the standings.
Rounding out the top five were Rob Clarke in the London Mechanical Plumbing & Heating #49 car in 4th and Drew Spicer in the Spicers Towing #89 car in 5th. Clarke's evening started out in grim fashion with a car he described as evil. Set-up changes done during the week still hadn't solved the team's troubles from Sunset. Even Fletcher after taking the #49 for a spin, to the delight of the Mosport crowd, was stumped. Resigned to parking the car after one lap for points, the team tried a final round of changes which brought the car back to life during the feature. Clarke said, "We are happy to discover that there is nothing broken. We made a step in the right direction tonight. We made major changes this past week and a number of adjustments tonight." Spicer brought a beautifully restored Outlaw to Mosport following the Sunset wreck. Krusty avoided the race carnage on Saturday and recovered from a fight with a racing pylon to record a respectable 5th place and rebounded to 4th in the standings.
The most serious wreck of the night took place on the last lap of the third heat race, when contact between two Outlaw cars drove Mike Bricknell's #69 hard into the outside wall of turn three. Bricknell was taken to the infield, shaken and sore but thankfully in one piece. However, his faithful "Nuclear Banana" was badly wounded with major damage to the front end. Mike said, "I would like to thank everyone who helped me with the car and showed concern about my hard crash into the wall. That meant a lot to me." We wish Mike and his team well as they recover from this unfortunate racing incident.
Lap one of the feature race witnessed the 2nd major wreck involving cars #15, #40, #52 and #90. After Fletcher and Maginnis passed pole-sitter Rudy Oppersma on the front stretch, Oppersma found himself racing hard with a hungry pack of Outlaws through turns one and two. Coming out of turn two onto the backstretch the cars were two and three wide with no chance to avoid another blink-of-the-eye super late model wreck. Oppersma sustained the greatest damage but there is hope that repairs can be made to the #40 in time for races in August.
The OSCAAR gang were pleased to see Ken Hayward and the Diesel Doctors #7.3 team back in the pits at Mosport after a disappointing Sunset event. They had initially tested the car for about 40 laps and it ran well. However, when they attempted a practice session at the Sunset OSCAAR race, their motor had two dead cylinders. The team arrived at Mosport with a rented motor while the primary motor was being repaired. Hayward started the feature 14th, worked his way up into the top 10, then cut a tire and had to come down pit lane. He finished the feature 11th, earning enough points to keep in striking distance of the 2006 top ten. During the last few weeks, the 7.3 team had three new sponsors come on board. "I would like to welcome and thank Bolt-on Performance, of Bolton, Swepco Lubricants, of Guelph and Surplus Electric Equipment, of Concord." said Ken, "We appreciate their support and look forward to their involvement in our racing program."
As evidenced in the fan survey completed last year, OSCAAR has many fans that follow the series very closely. Once again there was a capacity crowd at Mosport and many of the fans showed their enthusiasm and knowledge of the drivers. There were several drivers unable to attend the Mosport event due to various circumstances. Fans asked about John Owen, Bruce Gowland, Tony Calitri, Wes Lee Talons, Al Thomson and the Bickles to name a few. The drivers intend to return as soon as they can and wish to thank the fans for their interest and concern.
