Anderson turned back by teammate in semifinals
MORRISON, Colo. (July 16, 2006) - Three time and defending NHRA POWERade
Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson advancing to the semifinal round before
being turned back by his teammate Jason Line at the 27th running of the
NHRA Mopar Mile-High Nationals.
It was all over at the starting line in the opening round for Tommy Lee,
who took over for Erica Enders, who had vacated the seat of the Chevy
Cobalt and moved to another team, when he red lighted, handing Anderson
a free pass to the second round against Ron Krisher.
With the quickest elapsed time of the second round of eliminations,
Anderson earned lane choice against Line in the semifinals when he
turned back Ron Krisher with a stout 7.107-second pass in his KB Racing
LLC-owned, Summit Racing Equipment-backed Pro Stock Pontiac GTO.
In the semifinals, Anderson gave away five hundredths at the green light
start and Line led from start to finish running a pass of 7.124 seconds
to a 7.157-second pass for Anderson.
"I made a good run in the second round and cut a good light," said
Anderson following the loss to his teammate. "I was starting to think
maybe things are turning around. Then in the semifinals things went the
other way and I had a .101 light (reaction time). At the same time the
car had a horrible run. The driver didn't do his part and the car
didn't perform like it should, but the bottom line is that I got beat by
a better car and driver today.
"Summit doesn't get the trophy today and that's a bummer because we had
two great cars this weekend. I really felt that we had the two best
cars on the track. My new Pontiac GTO has potential; it's going to be
fine. We as a team have got to make it work and I have to drive the thing."
Although Anderson advanced to the semifinal round he took a hit in
points. For the first time since the season opening race in Pomona,
Anderson, who now has 875 points, will relinquish the lead in the NHRA
POWERade Pro Stock point standings. Line, who finished in the runner-up
position, will take over the lead with 897 points. Dave Connolly, who
won the Pro Stock title here, is third with 846 points.
The Western Swing, three races on three consecutive weekends in July,
continues. The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series now moves to Pacific
Raceways in Kent Wash., near Seattle. The second of the three races,
the NHRA Schuck's Auto Supply Nationals, will get underway on Friday,
July 21.
ESPN2 will air same-day television coverage of eliminations for the NHRA
Mopar Mile-High Nationals from 9 p.m. until 12 midnight (Sunday, July
16). The elimination show repeats early Monday morning (July 17) from
2:30-4:30 a.m. Television times are Eastern Time (ET) and subject to
change at anytime. Check local listings.
