KJ Will Start Sixth in Denver
Event: 27th Annual NHRA Mile-High Nationals
Day/Date: Saturday, July 15, 2006
Location: Bandimere Speedway, Denver, CO
On the strength of a 7.098-second, 194.24 mph run on Friday evening,
Kurt Johnson qualified his ACDelco Cobalt sixth for Sunday's final
eliminations of the NHRA Mile-High Nationals in Denver, CO. With
Saturday's warmer temperatures virtually ensuring his spot in the top
half of Sunday's starting field, Johnson used his final two qualifying
attempts to fine-tune his set-up, completing his effort with a solid
7.125-second, 194.77 mph run that had the second-generation racer
looking forward to race day.
"We saved the best for last. We came here with a fairly decent
combination, and kept making changes to adapt to the conditions. After
things didn't pan out in the first session, we made a few adjustments
and it responded with that 7.09 in the night session.
"We tried some other things this morning, which it didn't like, so we
got back to basics with carburetion, chassis clutch and such for the
afternoon session, and made a pretty good run. We ran 7.12, and 7.10
was low for the round, so we definitely have to pick it up for tomorrow,
but under these conditions, all you really want to do is qualify, and
we'll be shooting out of the six hole. Now all we want to do is win."
