REICHERT, PAYNE DRAW FIRST BLOOD AT ROUTE 66'S LUCAS OIL SERIES RACE

            JOLIET, Ill. - Although the first day of qualifying in the NHRA
Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Route 66 Raceway were hampered by
rain,  the opening rounds are complete.  Top Alcohol Dragster driver Bill
Reichert and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Jay Payne took the No. 1 qualifying
positions in their classes. 

Reichert, of Owosso, Mich., outpaced the field with a 5.362-second, 267.59
mph pass.  The second-place qualifier, Dave Heitzman of Grand Rapids, Ohio,
clocked in with a 5.440-second run at 252.10 mph.

Claremont, Calif., resident Payne set the bar in Top Alcohol Funny Car,
making a 5.660-second, 257.78 mph run.  Reigning division champion Mick
Snyder, Demotte, Ind., is the current No. 2 qualifier with at 5.738-second,
252.71 mph effort.

Bo Butner of Clarksville, Ind., was the best qualifier in Comp Eliminator
while Robin Brown, Madisonville, Ky., set the pace in Super Stock.  Dayton,
Ohio's Donald Holmes was No. 1 in Stock Eliminator and Tim Kirman of Morris,
Ill., led the Top Sportsman class.

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Route 66 Raceway, with
gates opening at 7 a.m. both days.  Qualifying and time trials continue
Saturday at 9 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have
two final qualifying sessions, at 5 and 8 p.m., to try to make the eight-car
field.  Eliminations start Sunday morning at 8.  Top Alcohol Dragster and
Top Alcohol Funny Car run first round at 1 p.m.

            Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are $19
Saturday and $21 Sunday.  A two-day ticket is $32.  Children 12 and under
are admitted free with a paid adult. 

            Route 66 Raceway is located in Joliet off Interstate 80 at
Highway 53.  Go south on Highway 53 and the track is on the left at 3200 S.
