VIDEO from Medialink: Improving Child Safety in and Around Cars

--When it comes to precious cargo, children are at the top of the list. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, child safety seats are extremely effective when properly installed -- reducing the risk of death by 73 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers. But according to the Safe Kids organization, only 20% of child seats are installed correctly.

But, safety inside the car is not the only thing. Safe Kids warns parents never to leave a young child alone in a vehicle, and to be extra careful that a youngster has not wandered behind a vehicle as it's pulling out.

Safe Kids has developed local partnerships and puts together clinics where parents talk with experts about keeping their young children safe in and around their vehicles. And for the last ten years, General Motors has been the national sponsor and has helped Safe Kids Worldwide give away more than 350,000 child safety seats to families in need.
