Sunset Speedway Report - OSCAAR

OSCAAR OUTLAW SUPER LATE MODEL RACING
John Fletcher Takes 2nd Win Of '06 At Sunset Speedway
By Don McLeod and Sandy Macfarlane
July 10, 2006
A near full moon, beautiful summer weather and Outlaw fireworks were the "special of the day" for Sunset Speedway on Saturday July 8. When the dust settled, a victorious John Fletcher climbed out of his car at victory lane with a big smile. The JNE Consulting #61 team had taken a gamble after the heat races and made major set-up changes to their Outlaw car. The gamble paid off resulting in Fletcher's second win of 2006. Although he won his first heat race, his 6th place finish in the final heat race of the evening tipped the team off that changes were needed. "Thanks to the guys on my team, we were able to replace springs, shocks and sway bar" said John, "We took a chance with the changes, but the car definitely drove better after that".
Another team that had the right set-up for Sunset was the ASA Alloy #67 team of Phil Bullen. Taking 2nd place in the feature, Bullen recorded his beat finish in three years. This is definitely the direction he wants to be going in after a disastous 2005 and high hopes for 2006 with a new sponsor. "One of my best runs" said Phil, "I thank ASA Alloys who put the dollars there so that I can run every week. I want to thank everyone on my team and all my sponsors. Great to get a good finish so close to home". Bullen came close to winning the hard charger award having moved 5 spots up from 7th on the grid. The team also took over 3rd place in the 2006 standings.
Shane Maginnis and the Kerr Cadillac Goodwrench Service #03 team completed their second straight event with top three results. After leading the feature from the pole for 40 laps, 3rd place was not the result everyone on the team was hoping for. However it was an excellent finish for a team that has taken time to get back in the super late model groove. Now they are poised to be a leading contender week-in and week-out. "I think I'm doing all right" said Shane, "after a few tough years, I now feel like I'm part of the OSCAAR family. Another win would have been great, but I used up the tires, so we're happy to take home 3rd."
Making a nice recovery after Mosport was 4th place finisher Al Shepstone and the Shepstone Haulage #15 team. Shepstone and his team are working hard at making a strong run in 2006. They made the necessary repairs to the #15 rear end and clearly had their car running well at the end of Sunset's feature. Bruce Gowland and the Gowland Sand & Gravel #18 team took home 5th, their best finish in two years. Gowland has committed to a full season in 2006 and has plans for a new Finish Line Fabricating body for the #18 car.
OSCAAR welcomes Tom Cuzzilla Jr to Super Late Model racing Outlaw style! Cuzzilla piloted the TNT Racing Products #50 car in his first ever OSCAAR event. "One of the better series going" said Cuzzilla, commenting on why he picked OSCAAR to go racing. His first event was a great success. Completing all 70 laps, he raced clean and used his head while ending the night with a 9th place finish in the feature.
The Outlaw fireworks started early on Saturday night with a first lap crash in the first heat race. Bill Reimer in the #78 car spun coming out of turn 4 and then turned back, crashing hard into the outside wall. Reimer was shaken but OK after the wreck. This was a tough break for a team entering their first race of 2006.
The Reimer crash also collected the #89 of Drew Spicer. After the crash, Spicer was ready to load his Outlaw on the trailer when members from five different OSCAAR teams showed up. They quickly went to work and by the second set of heat races, #89 was ready for action. Unfortunately, Spicer's hard luck for the night wasn't over. During the feature, the #89 was involved in another bad wreck and was done for the night. This wreck also took out the #22 of Glenn Watson. Both teams will be hard at work getting their cars ready for the next race.
Next stop on the OSCAAR schedule is the 2nd visit to Mosport scheduled for Saturday July 15th. This race should see a return for Pee Wee Evans and John Owen. Gary Passer is hoping for recovery from a shoulder injury and intends to go racing. We wish success to all the teams making repairs after Sunset.
