JOHNSON, HOUGH LEAD FIELDS AT WOODBURN
WOODBURN, Ore. - In the final rounds of qualifying for this
weekend's Les Schwab Tires Challenge NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series
Brandon Johnson of Shelton, Wash., jumped ahead of division point's
leader Steve Federlin with a pass of 5.496 seconds at 259.37 mph for the
No. 1 spot in Top Alcohol Dragster. Johnson is third in division points
but has struggled this year looking for his first win of the season this
weekend.
Gregg Lawrence of Salem, Ore., sits in sixth running 5.830
seconds at 254.38 mph.
Federlin finished second in the world last year and is
coming off a big win last week at Pacific Raceways outside Seattle.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying, Brain Hough of Junction City, Ore.,
and John Weaver of New Port Beach, Calif., ran identical times at 5.823
seconds but Hough will take the No. 1 spot with a faster mph at 245.03
to Weaver's 243.57. Hough is looking for his second win of the year and
hopes to break a 3-way tie in the point's battle between reigning
Northwest Division Champion Bucky Austin, Clint Thompson, and himself
all tied for the top spot with 128 points.
Shawn Cowie clocked in at 6.497 seconds at 206.56 mph to lead the
quickest Top Comp filed in history. The Richmond, B.C., resident is
followed by Paul Gladden of Tracey Calif., at 6.786 seconds with a pair
of Eugene, Ore., racers, Eddie Wells and Paul Nero, also making the
field heading into tomorrows eliminations. The previous record was set
last October in Las Vegas.
Jirka Kaplan jumped to the top of the field in Comp Eliminator running
6.931 seconds. The Calgary, AB., runner is followed by Oregon City,
Ore., racer Adam Bodish in his '89 Trans Am. Chuck Rayburn put his '64
Belvedere in the No. 1 position running 8.915 seconds to lead Don Little
and the rest of the Super Stock field. Little is second in his '70
Challenger.
Woodburn racer Joe Sorenson held on to the top spot in Stock
Eliminator with a 9.930 second pass in his '69 Camaro followed by
Renton, Wash., resident Bill Kost in second. Sorenson hopes for a repeat
performance of his win here last year.
In the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley
Davidson it was Jeff Havens of Yakima, Wash., with a .000 perfect
reaction time for the top spot followed by Grag Liskey in second.
Racing continues Sunday at 9 a.m. with eliminations for Top Alcohol
Dragster and Funny Car set for noon. Gates open at 8 a.m. Tickets are
$25 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 14. For more information, call
