Robert Wickens wins Formula BMW USA race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

July 1, 2006 – Indianapolis, IN. 8:15 pm EST - It was an elated Robert Wickens that called from Indianapolis to tell us that he had won the first of two races at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The win came from the front row when Robert launched off the start and never looked back. "It was great," exclaimed Robert. "I got the hole shot and led into turn one. The Safety Car was out on the next lap but I was able to get away on the restart."

Robert started to gap the field and had a lead of some 2.8 seconds going into the late laps. "The car was working well and I could see that the gap wasn't closing, so I decided to preserve the tires and run a conservative pace in that last few laps." Robert would cross the line 1.4 seconds ahead of second place.

Robert noted, "it was great to hear the Canadian anthem - on Canada Day and it is great to be back on the top step again."

With the win, Robert has moved into sole position of the lead in the series championship. A link to the points standings is provided below the chart.

Race 2 goes Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.
