SunTrust Driver Max Angelelli Finishes Seventh in IROC Race on Daytona Road Course
Daytona Beach, Florida(June 29, 2006) – Max “The Ax�?? Angelelli, 2005 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series Driver Co-Champion and driver of the Team Championship winning No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley finished seventh in the third of four rounds of the Crown Royal International Race of Champions (IROC) Race Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway.
This is the 30th anniversary of the Crown Royal IROC Series, an invitation-only series which features 12 of the best drivers in the world competing in identically prepared Pontiac Firebirds. It is only the second time the series has run on the Daytona International Speedway road course, with the first being in the inaugural 1973-74 season. Angelelli and Taylor were invited for winning the 2005 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series Team and Driver’s championship.
Angelelli started from the fifth position and was off to a great start by moving up two positions in three laps.On Lap 5 Max “The Ax�?? Angelelli slid pass Mark Martin, Scott Sharp, then fellow Italian Max Papis to gain second position, only for Papis to grab it back on Lap 6.
Max maintained third position into the tenth lap when the first of four full-course cautions came out. The field did a mandatory pit stop for tires and fuel following lap 10. Angelelli tangled with Matt Kennseth and Martin and the three spun onto the grass. He returned to the field in eighth position with just five laps to go.
Angelelli made a dash to the checkered, beating our Frank Kimmel for the seventh position in the 20-lap, 71.2-mile IROC race on the 3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway road course. The race was run by 2005 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup champion Tony Stewart. Fellow road racer Max Papis finished second and Ryan Newman was third.
“It was a tough race,�?? said Max Angelelli, who also drove in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series race just moments before to a fourth-place finish, along with co-driver Wayne Taylor in the No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley. “I tried to brake too late and got caught up with these guys. I must apologize to them.�??
Angelelli and Taylor are each driving in two of the four IROC races this season, a first for the series. Their combined points are totaled for an overall point score. Taylor finished sixth on the high banks of Daytona in February and Angelelli repeated the effort with a sixth-place finish at the Texas Motor Speedway in April. Taylor will finish the season at Atlanta Motor Speedway on October 28th.
