Jeff Gordon to Race at Rolex 24 At Daytona with Wayne Taylor and Max Angelelli
Daytona Beach, Florida (June 29, 2006); In a press conference at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida today, Wayne Taylor (and his Surrey Sport LLC company) and SunTrust Racing announced that four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon will co-drive the No. 10 SunTrust Racing car in the 45th annual Rolex 24 At Daytona, January 27-28, 2007.
Of all the NASCAR drivers, Jeff's the guy, said SunTrust Racing car owner/driver Wayne Taylor, a two-time winner of the twice-around-the-clock endurance classic race in 1996 and 2005. He proved again last weekend his road racing skills are outstanding when he won at SearsPoint. I think he's going to be an asset to the team for the Rolex 24.
This is something that I've wanted to do for a long time and I'm really looking forward to it,?? said Gordon, driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. It was important to me to do this with a quality team like Surrey Sport, and I'm looking forward to teaming up with two champions, Wayne and Max.
SunTrust Bank is proud of its association with Grand American Road Racing and our partnership with Surrey Sport and team owner Wayne Taylor, said Craig Kelly, Corporate Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of SunTrust Banks, Inc. Wayne has developed a winning team with a solid driver line-up, including both Wayne and Max Angelelli. The team's success has included winning the Rolex 24 At Daytona in 2005 and the Daytona Prototype Team and Driver Championships last year.
SunTrust looks forward to continue this successful partnership in 2007. With the Rolex 24 being the premier event in the Grand-Am series, we are excited and proud to welcome Jeff Gordon as part of the driver line-up for the 2007 Rolex 24 At Daytona, his first 24 hour endurance race.
My plan is to do my best, have some fun and hopefully get another win in Daytona,?? said Gordon, a three-time Daytona 500 winner.
Gordon, who burst onto the NASCAR Cup scene in 1992, recently captured his ninth NASCAR NEXTEL Cup road course victory last Sunday at Infineon Raceway at SearsPoint in Sonoma, California. It was a record fifth at the 1.99-mile track for the Vallejo, California native. Gordon has won four championships in NASCAR's premier division (1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001) and has 74 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup wins to date.
Wayne Taylor and Max Angelelli, along with teammate Emmanuel Collard, won the Rolex 24 At Daytona in 2005. The No. 10 SunTrust Racing team then went on to capture the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series Team Championship and Driver's Co-Championship for Taylor and Angelelli.
We were very excited with the victory we achieved at the Rolex 24 last year,?? said Max Angelelli, long-time co-driver with Wayne Taylor. It set us off for a great season that culminated in the Grand-Am series championship. We welcome Jeff Gordon to the SunTrust team and hope we can achieve another win with him as a teammate.
