World's Largest Automotive Supplier Joins JT Open Program to Help Establish JT Format as the Global Industry Standard for Sharing 3D Data

Robert Bosch GmbH joins other leading manufacturers and PLM industry leaders in UGS' rapidly expanding initiative to make 3D product data easily and globally accessible

PLANO, Texas, June 27 -- UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced Robert Bosch GmbH, the world's largest automotive supplier, has become a Corporate member of the JT(TM) Open Program, the rapidly expanding PLM industry initiative that is committed to making 3D product data easily accessible to a broad and diverse global audience.

The JT(TM) data format is the manufacturing industry's most widely used lightweight data format for sharing vital product information -- including detailed 3D product geometry -- to facilitate effective enterprise-wide collaboration throughout a product's lifecycle.

Bosch has been using JT for more than four years to help promote innovation and collaboration among its engineers who use a variety of computer-aided design (CAD) software applications in product development. Furthermore, since nearly every major CAD application can output lightweight JT files, Bosch is able to seamlessly, efficiently and accurately share CAD data outside of engineering and throughout its organization, providing all departments with the ability to access and visualize real-time 3D product data.

"Establishing JT as the global industry standard for 3D product visualization and collaboration will provide tangible business benefits for not only the automotive technology at Bosch, but for the entire automotive sector," said Gerhard Felten, Executive Vice President Applied Research and Production Technology, Robert Bosch GmbH. "With UGS' January announcement of its intent to publish JT, we believe that all the pieces are now in place to realize this goal."

Bosch will leverage its broad expertise across multiple industries to help establish the open JT 3D data format -- developed by UGS -- as the industry standard. As a leading global manufacturer, Bosch is lending its considerable strength to the ongoing promotion of JT as a base element for product data sharing across all industries, and will actively influence further development of JT to ensure the benefits are realized for its own multinational business groups and partners.

"We want to establish JT as an alternative to native CAD data exchange with our OEMs," added Roberto Sorito, Project Leader for Digital Mock-Up and Engineering Collaboration at Corporate Research and Advance Engineering, Robert Bosch GmbH. "Furthermore we will influence the further development of JT according to our requirements regarding drawing less product development processes."

"UGS' vision is to create a common, open standard for sharing 3D data so that it can be made easily accessible to anyone with Internet access -- not just to engineers using sophisticated CAD software," said Dave Shirk, executive vice president, Global Marketing, UGS. "As the JT Open Program continues its impressive expansion with the addition of prestigious and respected global manufacturers like Bosch we are helping the industry move one step closer to that vision."

About JT and JT Open

The JT Open Program is an initiative driven by global leaders that view PLM as a competitive advantage and have adopted the 3D JT data format as a standard. JT is a common 3D data format for enabling product visualization and information sharing between PLM software applications. The robust functionality and lightweight nature of JT technology makes it possible to view and share product data, manufacturing information and interactive images worldwide, in real-time and throughout all phases of the product lifecycle.

Membership in JT Open is available to any and all end user corporations, independent software vendors (ISVs), academic institutions and non-profit industry organizations. Current JT Open members include UGS, General Motors, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Siemens, Mazda, Renault, Visteon, Caterpillar, Autoweb, Bentley, PTC, Alias, Theorem, Opticore, Polyplan, Landmark, Spicer, Realtime Technology and Actify as well as academic members Brigham Young University, Technical University Darmstadt, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Michigan.
