Progressive Government Policies to Drive Growth of Indian Automotive Sensors Market
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, June 27 -- The Indian government's move to make the installation of certain automotive sensors mandatory are driving rapid growth in all segments of the Indian automotive market. The compulsory use of sensors in all cars coupled with the decreasing cost of sensors has set the Indian automotive sensors market on a path for exponential growth.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (www.transportation.frost.com), Indian Automotive Sensors Market, reveals that the Indian automotive sensors market revenue reached US $81.7 million in 2005 and is likely to hit US $577.4 million in 2012.

"Until recently, the Indian automotive market predominantly sold small cars, which performed most functions mechanically," says Frost & Sullivan Research Associate Mr. Satish Kumar Sampath. "However, the market has undergone a drastic change, with end users increasingly demanding premium and luxury cars fitted with sensor-driven electronic control units (ECUs) that behave like a single integrated system."
Along with consumer preferences, the market is also seeing the increasing use of sensors to handle environmental, safety and fuel economy concerns, especially with the implementation of the emission norms (Bharat Norms) by the Indian government. In addition, the government intends to enforce close to 70 European safety norms, including air bag deployment, which will likely boost demand for sensors such as accelerometers that function as crash sensors.
Despite the stringent emission norms laid down by the Indian government, sensors manufacturers still need to spread awareness about the benefits of technically superior sensors to automotive manufacturers. Increased awareness in this regard will provide an added boost to the demand for sensors as the Indian automotive market is price sensitive and manufacturers are not inclined to install many sensors, if there are no government regulations making them mandatory.
"Most automotive manufacturers are reluctant to absorb the costs associated with sensors or to pass it on to the consumers," says Satish.
"Automakers generally are cautious towards automotive sensors, as they are skeptical about the ability of their consumers' willingness to fork out a higher price for their vehicles due to the installation of sensors in vehicles," says Satish.
However, these trends are now changing rapidly. The planned installation of sensors by automotive manufacturers could help manufacturers offer end users longer-lasting, more efficient vehicles with better comfort and safety features.
