MADISON, Ill. (June 24, 2006) - Bob Vandergriff Jr. made good use of
Saturday's cloud cover and gathered track knowledge to move into the field at the
O'REILLY NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway. Using Jim
Dupuy's tuning talents, Vandergriff drove his UPS Top Fuel dragster into the
No. 14 spot during the first session with a 4.821 second pass at 307.02 mph.
As the sun began to fall below the horizon, Dupuy read the conditions
masterfully and gave Vandergriff the power he needed to lay down a 4.634/321.27
blast to propel the UPS team into the sixth position for Sunday's
elimination's.
"We are happy to be sitting in the top half of the field," said
Vandergriff. "We seem to do better on Saturday's. We'll get our Friday act together so
we can take more advantage of preparing for Sunday's elimination's with
Saturday's runs. I think we left .05-.06 on the table. Hopefully we can call on
that for Sunday."
Vandergriff will draw rookie J.R. Todd for raceday and they will be the
first pair out.
