ELIMINATION FIELDS SET FOR NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES IN FONTANA

            FONTANA, Calif. - More than 570 race cars completed qualifying
and time trials Saturday at Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway.  The
NHRA Pacific division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event kicked off on
Friday and will conclude with eliminations on Sunday.

            In Top Alcohol Dragster, defending division champion Chris Demke
of Sunland, Calif., set the pace with a 5.530-second, 260.91 mph pass,
putting him nearly a tenth of a second ahead of No. 2 qualifier, Bob Perkins
of Bluffdale, Utah.  Perkins ran 5.628 seconds at 256.11 mph to place just
ahead of Alta Loma's Sean O'Bannon who qualified with a 5.642-second, 257.14
mph effort.  In Sunday's first round of eliminations, Demke will square off
against Brian Smith, Fullerton, Calif., who qualified in the final spot for
the eight-car field with a 6.337-second, 225.67 mph pass.

            There were 17 Top Alcohol Funny Cars vying for a place in the
eight-car elimination field for that class.  In the end, Ron August Jr. was
the top qualifier, running 5.819 seconds at 246.75 mph.  Don Hudson of
Stockton, Calif., was the No. 2 qualifier.  August will take on Newport
Beach, Calif., racer John Weaver in the first round.  Weaver, a former
division champ, made a 5.929-second, 242.06 mph run to slip into the final
qualifying spot.

            In Comp Eliminator, Dean Carter, Glendale, Ariz., remained the
top qualifier as did Stock Eliminator racer John Schloe, Garden Grove,
Calif., and Top Comp competitor Del Cox Jr., of Downey, Calif.  In Super
Stock, Chuck Rayburn, Castro Valley, Calif., moved into the No. 1 position
and Tucson, Ariz., racer Joseph Smith rode his Kawasaki into the lead spot
in the Sportsman Motorcycle class.

Racing continues Sunday at Auto Club Dragway.  Gates open at 7 a.m. and
eliminations start at 8 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
will run first round at noon.  

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event are $20.  Children
