Press Release: Eve of Destruction at LVS 06/20/2006
The “EVE” Takes Over the High Banks!
Tuesday June 20, 2006 – By: Rodney Rescott
New Lebanon, NY: A brief passing storm couldn’t cool off the hot action of
the annual return of the “Eve of Destruction” at the famed Lebanon Valley
Speedway. The High Banks were transformed into a destructive force for ages
to enjoy.
The carnage began after a short delay, and then the fans piled into their
seats and the isles, as it was standing room only for the unusual program of
stunts, races, and tons of fire and explosions.
Waste Management and Heavy Haulers presented the night that started with the
ever popular 4 cylinder 20 lap feature event. Nearly 50 4 cylinder autos
took to the Valley Speed and the action got off to a heated start. Several
cautions flew for spins, crashes, and even multi-car simultaneous roll-overs
down the front stretch in front of the huge crowd. When the drivers emerged
from their mangled cars unharmed, other than a little dizzy, the crowd
roared and cheered their approval. The race was finished by a last lap pass
giving the victory, and a $200.00 check to Greg Davis’ #172. The top 5 were
Davis, Frank Sorrento, Todd Goldstein, Ray Hall, and Jim Williams.
The packed house was also treated to several stunts provided Stuntmaster.com
productions, with Crash Moreau at the helm, he drove through several parked
cars standing on their sides and ends with huge expositions and fire, but
emerged unharmed to the cheers.
Another fan favorite was the Trailer Race whereas cars are required to
attach a trailer, camper, or boat and trailer and complete a 20 lap event
without loosing it. If you lose it, you lose the race. With several
abandoned trailers and boats littering the speedway, the competitors weaved
their way through the debris to take the checkers with another last lap pass
by Bill Davis, capturing the $1000.00 pay off. The top 5 were Davis, Kevin
Winters, Chrissy Hilt, Robert Gibson, and Al Relyea
The famed School Bus Race, celebrating the end of another school year for
the kids, took to the track for their 12 lap $1000.00 feature. Another
crowd pleaser, as the filed, stuffed full of local race drivers, as well as
some “hired guns” attacked the High Banks with some breathless action. With
a charge from the back of the pack, Todd Goldstein of East Greenbush,
powered his way to the front on lap 11, to take the lead from Nassau’s Danny
Burl, and never looked back. Goldstein took the checkers, followed by Rob
Maxon, then Burl.
The night was capped off by several additional events. First stuntman,
Crash Moreau drove a 20 foot motor home, complete with attached boat and
trailer, to its demise by launching it at speeds in excess of 60 mph, over a
25 foot ramp into rows of parked cars. He managed to clear 4 full rows of
the cars parked nose to tail before coming to an abrupt stop. He emerged
from the wreckage to the roar of the crowd before being loaded into the
ambulance for precautionary reasons.
Then the Demo Derbies took to the track. First was the traditional derby,
won by James Hatch, then a special “Minivan” Demo made it first ever
appearance, Craig Westerfelt took the win. There was also a Reverse Race
won by Dan Burl, and a Roll-Over Contest won by Johnny Duncan. The night
came to a close with the lights going down, and the heat cranked up as the
“Green Momba” Jet Car strapped itself to a Chrysler New Yorker, and went
full throttle! When the smoke, fire, and mass of sparks came to a rest,
there was nothing left to the Mopar but a pile of melted metal.
With the first of several special shows coming to a close, it was just a
dent in the door of the action yet to come. The next big event on the
schedule is the coming Saturday Night, as its all Fireworks, Fireworks, and
Fireworks. Presented by Berkshire Bank and Capital Tractor, along with a
Carquest $3,000.00 to win Modified special. Then on July 8th, it’s the
first even regular Saturday Night $6,000.00 to win 100 lap Modified Bud
Classic present by Budweiser.
Also in July is the return of the USHRA Monster Truck Summer Nationals July
10th, 11th, and 12th. Tickets are on sale now, but are going fast for this
3 night event. If that weren’t enough, as the World of Outlaws Sprint Car
Series returns to the Valley of Speed on Sunday July 23rd. These seats are
going fast too, as all seats are reserved!
