INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (June 20, 2006) – 2003 NHRA World Champion Tony Pedregon
and his Q Power Nitro Funny Car Team head to Gateway Int’l Raceway in
Madison, Ill. (near St. Louis, MO), this weekend for the O’Reilly NHRA
Midwest Nationals, the 12th of 23 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series events in
2006.  Pedregon retained fifth-place in the point standings after a strong
showing in last week's Englishtown race.

 

"St. Louis is unique because it's one of the few times of the year we run in
the evening," Pedregon explained.  "I am encouraged heading into this week
because I've always been partial to night racing, and we know the Q Power
team can run well in those cooler conditions.  From a spectator's
standpoint, it's more exciting and much more of a show, and we love running
in front of all of those enthusiastic fans.  For the teams, we have the
opportunity to race when the track has not had direct sunlight on it, and
that's a different challenge for us from other races.  I'm also excited
because we've learned a lot during the past few races and we know we can
correct some of the situations we've experienced in the past heading into
this race.  I'm looking forward to putting Q back into the winner's circle
in St. Louis."  

 

The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season hits its midpoint in the shadow
of the famed St. Louis arch, an apt symbol because from this point on, it’s
tricky to remain at the top of the pack and easy to slide off. The majority
of the event, including Professional qualifying and eliminations, is held at
night, providing the spectacle that only drag racing can: five-foot-long
header flames searing the night as 7,000-horsepower beasts race into the
dark. When the sun sinks low on the other side of the Mississippi, the
action begins on a track that has shown itself capable of dishing out
incredible performances.

 

How to Get There: Five minutes from downtown St. Louis, Gateway Int’l
Raceway is on Interstate 55/70 at Exit 4. From St. Louis, take I-70 south to
I-55/70 and travel east to Exit 4.

 

After conquering the quarter-mile Gateway Int’l Raceway this weekend, the
NHRA warriors head to Denver, Colo., and the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals
in Denver, Colo., at Bandimere Speedway on July 14-16.  Check your local
ESPN2 listings for broadcast times and event coverage.

Pedregon ran a 4.79 Friday night but the pass was disallowed by the NHRA
when his team did not stop and weigh the car at the inspection station due
to the drama of an engine explosion at the finish line.  This was Pedregon’s
first DNQ in five years dating back to the Bristol race in 2001 (115
events).
