400 Laps At Orange Show Speedway
There were 23 short track races scheduled for 1971-a record number of events for the west coast season. In addition, there was one more combined Winston Cup West race to be held back at the Riverside Raceway in June. The first race of this short track season was the “Orange 400” in San Bernardino on March 7. This event would go down in history as the longest short track race ever run by western competitors.
An article by Bob Kissinger read, in part:
Jack McCoy, the racing Modesto tire shop owner, drove his ‘71 Dodge to victory in the Orange 400 at the Orange Show Speedway Sunday Afternoon, before a sun drenched crowd. Riding the winner’s tailpipe and challenging all the way was racing farmer and Riverside 500 winner, Ray Elder of Caruthers, who tried every trick in the trade to pass the crafty McCoy, but had to settle for second in his ‘70 Dodge. Running third in the longest, richest short track late model race in California, was Johnny Steel of Carmichael in his ‘69 Ford, and rookie Ivan Baldwin of San Bernardino pushed his small block Chevy up to a solid fourth, with Glen Francis of Bakersfield fifth at the wheel of his ‘70 Chevy.

Directions: The hotel is located on the west side of the 210 freeway at Huntington Drive about 6 miles west of the 605 freeway.

This is also the same weekend of the NASCAR Grand National, West division race at Irwindale Speedway July 22, 2006.
