FAST ACTION CONTINUES ON PACIFIC RACEWAYS' QUARTER-MILE AT NHRA LUCAS OIL
DRAG RACING SERIES
KENT, Wash. - Racing continued Saturday at Pacific Raceway's
NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event presented by Bret Chevrolet.
Northwest division competitors took to the quarter-mile for the second day
of the three day meet. Most competitors made qualifying and time trial
passes but in the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car classes it
was eliminations day. In Top Alcohol Dragster, Steve Federlin scored the
win and in Top Alcohol Funny Car Brian Hough took home the trophy.
The win marked Federlin's second final-round appearance and
first trip to the winner's circle this season. In the final, the No. 4
qualifier from Oregon City, Ore., made a 5.353-second, 264.34 mph pass to
eclipse second place qualifier Garrett Bateman of Cameron Park, Calif.
Bateman ran 5.605 seconds at 261.22 mph. On his march to victory, Federlin
beat Brandon Johnson, Shelton, Wash., in the opening round of eliminations
and in the semis he took out the No. 1 qualifier, Duane Shields of Boulder
City, Nev.
Hough and Northwest Hitter, Bucky Austin, have done battle
before. This time Hough, a Junction City, Ore., racer, took the hole shot
victory over Austin of Fife, Wash. Hough's 5.648-second, 255.92 mph pass
was not as quick as Austin's 5.631-seocnd, 256.36 mph run but Hough got a
big jump off the starting line with a .008-second reaction time (.000 is a
perfect reaction time) and never looked back. Austin was the class' top
qualifier and Hough was No. 2.
In Comp Eliminator, Gary Anderson, Tacoma, Wash., was the top
qualifier and in Super Stock, Castro Valley, Calif., resident Chuck Rayburn
led the pack. Tommy Gaynor, Vancouver, Wash., set the pace in Stock
Eliminator and Top Comp racer Shawn Cowie, Richmond, B.C., and Sportsman
Motorcycle rider Mike Scott, Bonney Lake, Wash., were tops in their classes.
Eliminations continue Sunday at Pacific Raceway. Gates open at 8 a.m. and
the action on the track gets under way at 10 a.m.
