SCELZI NO. 4 QUALIFIER IN ENGLISHTOWN
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 17, 2006) - Gary Scelzi drove the Mopar/Oakley Dodge
Charger R/T Funny Car to No. 4 in qualifying for the K&N Filters
SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway, following three of four solid
qualifying passes.
The reigning POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car champion posted his
quickest lap Friday night, a 4.811-second elapsed time at 321.50 mph.
Scelzi's first attempt delivered a 5.016/299.26, the third a tire-smoking
6.170/148.67, and in the final session, in the "as advertised" hot and humid
Englishtown, N.J., conditions, he pulled out the second quickest pass of
that round, a stellar 4.824/323.66.
"I like our chances," said Scelzi, of finally winning a national event at
this track. "The Mopar/Oakley Dodge has gone down the track every time but
once, and, in the one that it didn't, we were trying to go a little too much
and the sun came out and kind of caught us off guard.
"We know where we're not going to go tomorrow. A 4.82 is just fine for us
right now. Lights (reaction times) are good, the car's good, and, again,
it's 'execute' and see what we can do tomorrow."
Scelzi will meet Cruz Pedregon in the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
