NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES - NORTHWEST DIVISION

SHIELDS, AUSTIN LEAD QUALIFIERS AT PACIFIC RACEWAYS' LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING
SERIES EVENT

            KENT, Wash. - In the first rounds of qualifying at the NHRA
Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event presented by Bret Chevrolet, Top Alcohol
Dragster driver Duane Shields and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Bucky Austin
took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes. 

Shields, of Boulder City, Nev., outran the field with a pass of 5.365
seconds at 268.28 mph.  And Fife, Wash., resident Austin outpaced the field
with a 5.536-second, 259.01 mph run.

Top qualifiers in other classes were Gary Anderson, Tacoma, Wash., in Comp
Eliminator; Jerry Jenkins, Modesto, Calif., in Super Stock; Tommy Gaynor,
Vancouver, Wash., in Stock Eliminator; Shawn Cowie, Richmond, B.C., in Top
Comp; and Seattle's Mike Hauer in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley
Davidson.

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Pacific Raceways.
Saturday, gates open at 8 a.m. and final qualifying and time trials begin at
10 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run all three
rounds of eliminations on Saturday starting at 3 p.m.  The Armageddon Eve of
Destruction, a special event featuring Jet Cars and AA/Supercharged Coupes,
is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Saturday.  On Sunday, gates open at 8 a.m. and
eliminations resume at 10 a.m.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are $20 Saturday and $20
Sunday.  Children 7 to 14 years old are $4 each day and kids 6 and under are
admitted free.  Saturday's ticket includes the Armageddon Eve of Destruction
